View Full Version : Any feedback on 2.8 30V chips? KurtW 12-24-1998, 07:35 PM Anyone have feedback on 2.8 30V chips?
Chris Hlubb 12-24-1998, 09:37 PM I have had no problems in about 20,000 miles. Its great, much better throttle response and fell overall. Higher redline, no speed limiter. Costly but you really cant do anything about that.
Chris

my A4 page

KurtW 12-25-1998, 03:01 PM Nice drop on your 2.8, Chris. Your friend's Avant, however, NEEDS a drop. SportWheels' Eibach/Bilstein setup is great (50mm). Joe M 12-25-1998, 04:10 PM ...but uhhh, please tell me it isnt THAT bad????
Im looking around for springs. So far, I have the same shocks as Chris, the yellow KONIs. I do want a 50mm drop, but have only found the somewhat expensive MTM/H&R 50mm springs.
If you know anyone who carries the 50mm Eibachs in Europe, please contact me on the above address. Remember that I don't have Q.
Joe M
'98 A4 Avant T KurtW 12-25-1998, 04:47 PM After driving two "Sport" packages (who are they kidding - maybe compared to a Cadillac - EEWWWW!), I ordered mine with base suspension with the intention of a full suspension replacement.
The 50mm is not necessarily in the springs, but in the Bilstein/Eibach setup is variable by location of the spring perch on the shock body(see EC Sept 98).
Ride quality not degraded much, about like S-class Mercedes. Handling VERY improved. Note: for Avant, a 50/40mm drop gives some rake to body and looks better with the higher tail of the Avant.
Don't have a Euro source for Eibach, but as noted, drop can be accomplished with the right shock design. Good Luck. Joe M 12-26-1998, 12:39 AM There ARE A4s with higher riding height than mine you know. But don't worry, with time my car will be bad too, and be able to outperform most rides. I said most, not all. You have to understand that some people just cant do the whole package at once.
Again, if there would have been more kits avaliable to me that I knew of, which lowered the car 50mm, I WOULD have looked into them. I have NOT found those Bilstein shocks here. And I think I also prefer the KONIs over Bilstein, which leeds me to find 50mm springs instead.
As for the 50/40 drop, again, which company makes a kit like that? The H&R Race Springs you say? Well, 4.75/40mm, but also not avaliable here to my knowledge, instead they sell a 60/40 kit.
As for modified spring perches, I think there might be a way of getting KONIs like that from MTM, but then I already can get their 50mm springs...
Comparing ride quality to the S-class? Why?
I would NOT say that the stock sport suspention is that bad. It all depends on what you are comparing it with. Say the Volvo S40 T4. Id say that the sport suspention on the A4 easily outperforms the one on the V40, although the Volvo is lower. As for the M-Fahrwerk on the 3-series, I cant really telll, but then a more fair comparison would be against the Quattro GmbH's Fahrwerk. You can also say that the stock 1.8T sucks compared to ABTs AS4, or MTMs 330Hp version of the engine. The more money you pay, the better stuff you get. I would NOT be able to get aftermarket swaybars/shocks/20mm springs of comparable quality or better for the price I paid for the sports package.
Now, if you have any pics of an Avant with a 50/40, drop, Id very much like to see them, also if you have some pics of your dropped ride, well, that would be interesting to see too!
Joe M Josh 12-26-1998, 10:20 AM RB 12-26-1998, 05:39 PM Since performance gains between various chip vendors is equal, I would go with the company that is the most established and has by far the best price, Neuspeed. KurtW 12-28-1998, 05:54 PM Sorry about the delayed response - I've been "enjoying" a case of Flu Virus, vintage 1998, that my sister gave half the family for X-mas.
After reflecting upon the image of your Avant, I realised that it was compressed horizontally for some reason, making it appear a leeeettle bit taller (no apparent Sport Package).
The Bilstein and Koni shocks with the adjustable perches are relatively new, and only a couple of companies (Neuspeed & Sport Wheels)over here have brought them in according to Bilstein of America. The reason for using this method over lowering springsis that you lose ALL of the suspension travel of the drop if shorter shock bodies are not used. The Bilsteins, and hopefully the Konis, accounted for this. Another problem, compunded by the first, is that a shorter, MUCH stiffer spring must be used to facilitate the drop AND keep the spring from stacking or off of the bump-stops. The shorter, adjustable perch shocks should be available where you are soon, if not already. I'm not sure where you are, so I can't say for sure (you really have no accent that I can detect....).
The reason for the S-class comparison is that the ride quality is firm and and controlled, but not at all harsh, while still very comfortable without the need for motion-sickness pills.
As soon as I learn how to post my own pics, I'll put on a pic of my Avant - still not as internet savvy as I need to be. It's got the drop, but it's awaiting its new 17" BBS RCs (X-mas to/from me).
Try your country's Bilstein or Koni distributor to inquire about those new shocks, you can use non-drop springs and still get the lowering without the jarring ride. If you need the U.S. companies, let me know ( a loooong way to go about it, but may br the only way for now). |
