View Full Version : Is there anyone got the wett turbo kit? Mr.A4 10-20-1998, 09:11 AM the problem I got is the ping sound from the engine when I step on full throttle, my car is tip and using octane 94 with stock exhaust. Anyone can help?
donp 10-20-1998, 09:21 AM I do. I have "step in detonation" but they are sending me revised software to correct the problem. I suggest you contact them to resolve the issue.
You're running the 235 kit on a tip car? It's been posted that the tip is only good up to 220hp. Hope you don't cook your transmission. DRF 10-20-1998, 09:37 AM (nt) donp 10-20-1998, 10:11 AM Last week Steve Brown posted some model numbers of the transmissions and the hp they would handle. I think he said the trans in the M3 is similar to the A4 tip but higher capacity. I don't know what's in the boxter... maybe the same as the M3.
Steve? stevebrown 10-20-1998, 10:25 AM Boxster uses the same 5hp19 as the A4..the 911 (993) does not...
The 5hp19 is rated to ~230 hp & ~230ftlbs peak according to the info that ZF sent directly to Tom Pinkston. This transmission is used in the A4, Passat & the Boxster.
The Tiptronic box & software may or may not be the same for the Boxster...but the power rating is apparently the same.
The 993 likely has a much stronger automatic (as would the 996) than the Boxster...dunno who makes it.
If you're doing 235 hp, you may be running the ragged edge of performance for your tranny...I would watch out for the following: DO NOT LET YOUR TRANSMISSION GO INTO OVERDRIVE (5th) WHILE at WOT. As a rule don't mash the go pedal in 5th & wait for the kickdown...shift it manually with the tip to 4th, then go for the accelerator. I say this because the O/D gear is usually a weak link in transmissions & the first to start slipping when pushed too hard.
AND, if you hear any grinding during a shift, you have trouble...and if that tranny is near $10,000, like I hear it is, you don't want that kind of trouble. Check your tranny fluid regularly...if it smells burnt, then you need help...bigger tranny cooler or back off the power.
steve Mr.A4 10-20-1998, 11:36 AM Mr.A4 10-20-1998, 11:45 AM Steve told me the trans. should be OK on the turbo kit, I don't know he lie to me or not. But I wuld like to know what exact problem you got after you installed the kit, and did you got the new chip from wett? Thanks for your help.
stevebrown 10-20-1998, 11:50 AM Mr.A4 10-20-1998, 11:54 AM stevebrown 10-20-1998, 12:13 PM The ratings I posted were from a post by Tom Pinkston here on the board. He got his info direct from the transmission manufacturer, ZF.
I would politely call Wett back & ask for some documentation to back up their 350hp claim.
Possibilities:
I suppose it is possible that ZF has conservatively rated their transmission.
It could be that the internals (torque converter in particular) could be beefed up to handle the higher power.
Weird that Wett would tell you that...in order to come up with that number, they must have done or seen some testing...I checked around for Boxster info & no-one has any info on the web about power-adding to near that level...
Let us know what Wett says...
steve Lucas 10-20-1998, 03:20 PM Yes Have problems.
Ping Ping Ping when you hit the Gas.
First Version Chip made the Car Run Lean 15:1.
Second Version Chip about 13:1 Still pinging.
I have sent Multiple Emails to Frank and a couple to Steve Pitts, No Answer.
Last contact from Frank was Monday, He said he will work on a new Chip whilst
he was on a plane to USA, Its Wednesday now, No new Version or Solution.
Dyno Graph shows No gain in torque over Original K-03 and Wett chip.
actually slightly worse torque in low rev range.
My patience will be at end by tommorrow.
I will most likely take the K-04 out and send it back to Wett Germany.
I think MTM or AZK K-04 kits are better researched.
steve moyle 10-20-1998, 04:54 PM Just order up the plugs, donp got great improvement with them and I dont see why you wouldnt as well. Too bad your not working well yet, I think it must be your ECU difference from N America. SM Lativ 10-21-1998, 01:59 AM I was talking to the distributor for MTM in australia and he says he tried a stage3 kit for a Passat 1.8T and the transmission failed.
James 10-21-1998, 03:27 AM Hey Everyone,
Remembering from the March '98 issue of Turbo magazine, A transmission company in New Jersey called Level 10 Performance strengthened a Toyota Supra TT auto tranny by upgrading the clutch material to a higher coefficient of friction, providing more positive shifts and less slippage, which causes heat, premature wear, and abrupt engagement of gear. This abrupt engagement happens when the slipping clutch plates finally grab onto the next gear, and sends a shock through the tranny. If you're lucky, more heat and wear. If you're not so lucky, damaged planetaries. They also increased line pressure for the fluid for faster and more positive shifts.
My question is, can the auto tranny in the A4 (5hp19) be upgraded in a similar fashion?
Anyone in the Tri-State area want to bring their automatic A4 to Level 10 and have them rip your tranny apart for an examination? *grin* (If I still lived on Long Island, I would have been there already)
I'd really like to have more than 200hp for my A4 with Tiptronic, but not if it means rebuild or replace the tranny every 6 months.
Any help would be appreciated.
James Wu
A4 Club of Vancouver
1998 Black/Onyx 1.8tqa (as in automatic)

A4 Club of Vancouver

Drew S. 01-11-1999, 07:38 AM |
