Hello all,
I just bought a used 98.5 A4 and noticed something that I didn't on the test drive(s).
Above 3,500 RPM there seems to be a high frequency vibration in the steering wheel, manual shift knob as the accelerator pedal. Not having driven any other A4's, I was wondering if I'm
paranoid or that it is normal - I just don't trust car salesmen. ;)
Dean
Either way, it is completely normal for the gearshift to move. Don't hold onto it unless shifting, or you could damage the gearbox! Let it move on its own. As for the steering wheel, I guess it would depend on your definition of a vibration. If you're accelerating hard, you can expect some vibration, but it shouldn't be more than like a silent "buzz." 1.8 is likely more prone to a high rev vibration. If you're really concerned, see if you can drive another one at an Audi dealer and ask a technician. I don't think this sounds odd though.
Charles
Is it based on RPM or MPH? If RPM, then it could be a broken engine mount, bad plugs, or bad plug wires. If MPH, it would most likely be tire balance.
just had that done on my 1.8TQ. You will notice (depends on how out of wack the balance is) that your dash/steering wheel/pedals shake/vibrate at different speed. Go get that checked first.
Cris
my 1.8T does have some vibration on hard acceleration, but you've got a pretty new car, most service managers wouldn't mind your question or taking your car out for a short drive to set your mind at ease. Also if there is something wrong then you'll know for sure and can get it taken care of.

If it varies with ENGINE speed, I would suspect a motor mount problem, or else is a problem in vibration damper on crankshaft.
if it varies with CAR speed, likelyn is wheel balance, tire out of round (flat spotted, etc.), driveshaft balance, or CV joint.
If it's a V6 30V, this is NOT normal. 4-bangers tend to be rougher, but others who have one could prob. say what their experience is.

I have a 99 2.8QM and have the exact same problem. If you figure out what it is please email me with details at elliotk@hotmail.com.
Thanks, Elliot
