I love the A4 (1.8 TQMS Silver/Ecru gray). Everyone I showed it to loves it as well. The Bose audio was well worth it, the all-weather package is teriffic, the car handles very well and the brakes are superb.
That said, I've read it b4 and never believed it, but the Dunlop 8000 E's are terrible in the snow. Last night I was on 95 S headed to Phila after about 1 inch of snow was already on the ground and I was scared. Not only did the A4 not have much grip, but there were so many idiots out there I was afraid I would get into an accident my 1st day with the car! Fortunately, I made it okay. I'm sure that the lack of traction will more than be made up by the excellent handling and grip I'll get off the snow.
Now I'm in the hunt for a winter set of tires and rims.
As for YBH, where I bought the car, I was treated fairly and got an okay price, 5.7% over invoice. Everything was negotiated over the phone over 1 day (salesman was Morten Dempsey, not Jim H). I was glad to see that there were no "hidden" fees when I picked up the car. I probably could've done a little better, but the Manual trans is very hard to find and I didn't think saving an additional $200 or so dollars was worth the wait.
I visited/phoned 10 dealerships in my search. YBH was the easiest to work with, negotiated the best price, and kept their word. Even though they are about 1 hour from my house, I plan to get my A4 serviced there because of my buying experience.
Jim H, thanks for the hat. Hope your holidays are great!
That feeling you had out on the highway, it is a rational response to an objective state of affairs, otherwise known as fear. The fools who blast by when there is viscous or frozen matter on the highway have not yet been confronted with a serious need to brake. They'll find out, eventually. Even with the sport set up, you can get through a Northeast winter without trouble, if you treat inclement weather as an occasion to slow down. The quattro will get you out of any rut, if you should lose the road. When the roads are once again clear, with your zs, you experience year-round one of the best arguments for an A4.
