I just got back from my dealer and spoke to one of the salespeople who informed me that he has 10 S4s that has been alloted to the dealership but 7 are already spoken for. There are 3 more available and can be had for $500 deposit. I was really really tempted.
If anyone in the tri-state area is interested give Audi of Bernardsville a call (and no I am not affiliated with them or Audi). They also gave me a pretty cool TT brochure which I have yet to check out.

Those guys are really into racing. One of the salespeople there, Tony I think his name is, just ordered the Wett chip and waiting for it to come in. We were discussing the speed limiter on the S4 which was cut down 30mph off the top speed for the American market. No official pricing on the S4 have been released as of yet.

Are you serious? Does that mean that the S4 will available nationwide or just New Jersey? Give me more details!

Dealer in SF Bay Area says $42,000 to $44,000 with availability in April. Will be asking MSRP.
What did your dealer say?
gramps...

Well we talked about European pricing which equates to about $46K as of now. He said it should be around that figure give or take a couple of grand.

The S4 will be available nationwide but according to him there will only be a total of 450 units delivered for the whole US market. I don't know how that number compares to the number of ///M3s slated for 1999 here in the US. Cris Groos, any comments ?

Not to be the voice of reason or anything, but you should expect MSRP + ADM (Additional Dealer Markup, a/k/a FILTHY PROFIT!).
They did this with Miatas and New Beetles (to name just 2), and if the S4 is as desirable as you guys seem to think, expect it here too.
My dealer Schulei Audi in Mason City Iowa, told me that S4's were not available until Sept,99 maybe. To cheer me up they gave me the really nice TT brochure.
Frank Maassen 98.5 2.8 QMS black, eibach, R28's

Y'know, this thread reminds me of arguments I've had in the past (about the Miata, but also about cars with limited U.S.-spec production runs of 500 or less). My theory is, yeah, I know how supply-and-demand/capitalism works, thank you very much, but the damage that dealers do to themselves and their manufacturers from a customer relations and brand reputation POV is worse over the long term than what is gained in the short term by "overcharging" customers. Supposedly, VWoA specifically requested their dealers NOT charge OVER factory retail for New Beetles and in return promised that supply would catch up with demand ASAP.

I picked a brochure up yesterday from Carlsen in Palo Alto and discovered one interesting fact:
On the spec sheet the maximum boost is listed as "1.8 bar"!
Pretty amazing considering it's a K-03 that only puts out 180 bhp. (sarcastic mode off)
Jim

John, I hope what you say is true, but it is contrary to what my salesguy stated to me today over the phone. I really think the S4 will be available 9/99.....Audi is very quiet about stuff being introduced....and usually very close to the last minute (at least in the USA). No brochures are available, no pricing information, no order sheets, no introductory dates, really nothing is available. I think allocations have not been made either. I just checked again with my salesguy, and he knows nothing about any allocations. He thinks that something might be know in April or May of 1999. BTW, my sales guy is ranked #9 in the US for sales and satisfaction levels (the goofy survey thing). I am on a list, for whatever it is worth, at my dealer. I happen to be a the top of the list as well.
Steve S.
97 2.8QM
I just hope I can afford the thing....and can arrange to get one if I can afford it.
