Both Classic and Pray took me on 8 minute around the block 45mph test drives.
I need to drive this car for real before making a final buying decision.

Audi of Bernardsville basically just told me to have fun with the car and tossed me the keys to a 1.8T and 2.8 (I bought the 2.8).
From what I've heard, Audi of Princeton is also pretty good with test drives.

Funny, Pray took me out for at least 1/2 hour on all kinds of roads. He even suggested that I take a loaner car for a day (they would like to knw that you're serious before doing this, though you don't have to go as far as leaving a deposit). Talk to Malachy in Sales, he's a nice guy, honest, and really knows his Audi's.

I've noticed that dealers seem to want two people in the car. Whenever I've gone test driving with someone else, we've gotten the car with no dealer. When I've gone by myself, the dealer tags along.

Why not be upfront with the salesperson and tell them you want to "drive" the car in order to make a decision. Tell them that 45 MPH jaunts are not answering your questions. You want to drive the car as if it was your own and have them come along.
Unless you have other motives.
It make take a couple of calls to find the right dealer but I'm sure you'll find someone if you're upfront with them. BTW, I took a fairly spirited drive with a salesperson from Star in Nanuet NY.

I just find them distracting. They're always talking and I just need to be alone w/ the car to make my decisions.

Maybe on Saturdays when they have a lot of showroom activity they'd be more willing to let you solo. I've been lucky here in DC. All of my test drives in Audis and Bimmers have been sans salesman, with or without the wife. When I drove a Lexus, the salesman rode along.

Mick
98 2.8 qm

Two sales guys at different dealers in NY even asked me if I'm sure I want a stick shift. :-(

I went to Bernardsville on a busy Tuesday evening and took out a 1.8 by myself. It's what convinced me to buy the car. (I cancelled my Passat order).

Audi of Bernardsville gave me a set of keys and told me to enjoy the ride. The salesman I dealt with was Jim Foster and the best description I can give you was that he was low-key and never exerted any pressure on me to buy a car that ended up selling itself.

I've taken 1.8T, 2.8 and all types of 3 series out alone, sometimes for over an hour.
