Please, do not take me wrong, I still believe that A4 is a good car, although it's not perfect, and especially not perfect in my case: I got really frustrated in trying the service to solve my wind noise, weak radio reception, not that anti-slipping EDS, and weak remote problems. So, I have gone to the Dark Side, i.e., BMW 323i.
I want to thank all the people with whom I have exchanged my experiances, which unfortunatelly have been tied mostly to the above problems that my 98 A4 1.8T had. And I want to thank everybody who shared their creative solutions and experiences on this board.
Let the Force be with you.
Nothing dark about a 323i. Nice car. Almost bought one. Just hope you aren't soon disappointed again, because it's very likely you will have many similar annoyances with your BMW. I tested one, had it 24 hours. It had bad wind whistle, the ignition switch would not turn over consistently unless I wrestled with the steering wheel (even when parked with wheels straight), had a questionable paint job and two annoying squeaks. On two occasions, the car stalled right after start-up for no apparent reason. (Car had 1,000 miles on it). This isn't to say the 323i isn't an excellent car, just that these things can and do pop up in any car you buy.
BDW '99 1.8Tqms

Those seem like very minor problems. It sounds as if you should have gotten a 2.8 from the start. It would have been a quieter car at speed and would have had full time traction control (ASR) similar to that of the BMW. Also, the price of the 2.8 is about the same as the 323i with similar options.
As far as the weak radio, that can be an annoyance. However, I just never really got what the big deal was with the weak remote range? So I can't click the doors open until I am within 20 feet of the car versus 50 feet. Who cares?
Anyway, good luck with the 323i. It's a nice car, as are all BMW's. I had a 535i before the A4, and my experience was just the opposite of what you expect your experience to be. My 535i had NO modifications, yet was falling apart. I even had to replace a cylinder head which warped due to the engine overheating (they never figured out why it overheated in the first place). Now I have a modified A4 that hasn't any major problems aside from a control arm being replaced under warranty.
Good luck,
Mike
