Got a call this morning...
"I found some information from technical and they are saying [the mirrors] should get up to 100 deg. Looks like we'll be seeing these things burning out. The ones I measured yesterday were getting up to 65-70. A brand new one from the showroom heated to 100 deg in a matter of minutes. I've ordered two new mirrors for your car."
- Jeff Grant
In a way, I think I did him a favor. Checking the mirror temperature at every regular checkup will probably turn up a TON of cooked mirrors. It takes less than five minutes to install each mirror, and the dealer can charge whatever the standard labor rate is plus parts back to Audi. 60% markup dealer profit!
David
Should the mirrors feel warm to the touch when on? (98.5)

It's been a while since I checked this forum, so I hadn't seen this thread before. My '97 A4 has been through three replacement mirrors now (1 passenger, 2 driver). I had assumed that they had just never worked (haven't had many circumstances to notice them working/not). Now I'm wondering if they've just been blowing out each time.
I'm afraid.... very, very afraid...

It seems like a backward step to me for Audi to switch to mirrors that are always on. Is it a cost-cutting move? Doesn't make sense to me.
StevenN '96 2.8 qm
