Secondly does the chip make it any faster Jason 04-02-1999, 06:05 AM I have an automatic 1.8T. The one without tiptronic. I have chipped it with the 1.0 bar Wetterauer chip. I certainly does do the trick.
Mind you, the 1.8T without the chip is still quite quick.
I am in the process of converting my A4 to Tiptronic. So that is another improvement. AntonC 04-02-1999, 06:15 AM ...and awesome with one. A friend has a 98 or 99 Maxima and we were doing 5-60 and 60-80 runs this past weekend. 5-60 was close but I managed to pull a car's length on him in the end. 60-80 runs were different though, I simply left him behind. BTW, the Max was a manual.
99 1.8TQTS Neuspeed RamAir zgrant 04-02-1999, 06:21 AM THANKS FOR CLEARING THAT STUFF UP. i WAS A LITTLE WORRIED BUT I GOT THE SPORT STEERING WHEEL WITH TIPTRONIC. SILVER LOADED. CAN'T WAIT
Rodney 04-02-1999, 06:26 AM But it also depends on what you're comparing it with and what you're used to. Drive one, if you're happy with it, who cares what everyone else thinks. This car does not shine in straight line acceleration, it's not intended to. A chip should make a big difference (I'm trying to hold off on a chip til I've paid for the car, but am not sure how much longer I can hold out), it's an extra 30-50 hp and a simmilar increase in torque. That's a 20% - 33% increase in power, with no increase in weight!
Regards,
Rodney
'99 A4 1.8tqms bwarren 04-02-1999, 06:47 AM Yes and No. The 1.8TQ is a slug off the line compared to a non Q or many cars for tht matter. 0-40 it is slower, 40 on up it is the same. Comparing it to a Maxima, you would get blown off the line w/o a chip but you could catch up with it and definitely out handle it. I have the Q Tip and am going to get a chip very soon (Garrett or Wett). I like 5 speeds but an Auto is better for my driving needs. Great car, you'll love it. Drew M 04-02-1999, 06:59 AM Chris K 04-02-1999, 07:24 AM Anton I do not think your friend knows how to drive the manual maxima. The new maximas will go from 0-60 in under 7 seconds with a manual. A tiptronic a4 especially with a neuspeed chip as yours will not be able to outrun a maxima, trust me. I have a tiptronic with TAP Stage II chip, custom exhaust, and a high flow down pipe and I am sure my car does not go 0-60 in under 7 seconds. The tiptronic especially with quattro is extremely slow off the line. With a chip it makes a whole lot of difference. Definitely chip it.
Chris K
98.5 1.8TQTS TAP Stage II BDW 04-02-1999, 07:30 AM
Just depends on what you expect from a car. Is it faster than a FOUR CLYLINDER Camry, yes. Can it run with a Camry six pot, no, and can it run with a Maxima, most certainly not. It's a fine transmission but it is a four, turbo or no, and you must accept the consequences of convienence. I understand some Tiptronic owners on this board have chipped and have been satisfied with results. Everyone who posts this question I offer my .02 ... after driving all variations of the A4 if I wanted the Tip I'd buy the 2.8. I have a '99 1.8 T (quattro, manual, sport pack, other stuff) and though the car is quick with the manual, I'm still dying for more torque and plan to chip after first oil change.
BDW BDW 04-02-1999, 07:38 AM
As a former '95 Maxima SE manual owner (before my '99 1.8Tqms), I heartily agree with your comment. The Maxima 5-speed really goes (in a straight line) when driven properly. I hope when I put a stage 1 chip in my A4 it will give me some of the same straight line thrills as my Max did, while delivering far superior everything else to the Nissan.
BDW Kevin 04-02-1999, 07:41 AM We put a .8 bar neuspeed and a ram air filter in our 98 a4 1.8Ta and it moves much better for 200$ it is with out a doubt the cheapest HP I've ever bought. However we are looking for more and would like reccomendations on 1.0 bar chips - whos? do you really need to replace exhaust &/or other components? some of these seem costly for the HP you get? Thanks for any and all advice. AntonC 04-02-1999, 07:46 AM nic 04-02-1999, 08:08 AM I'm sorry but I have a hard time compairing Japanese cars with any European car. I'm sure that the Maxima is a very nice one and I don't doubt it's speed. But as all of you who own Audi's or BMW, VW, etc. the German car has a solid, confidence inspiring feel, made for driving the hell out of it, at very high speeds. I chipped my new 1.8T qt, and although I stayed conservative with the Neuspeed version, it is now a very different car. I know that it would leave my BMW535i in a 20-60 test, but as I've mentioned in my post, this car is not about 0-60 (most European cars are not, it's simply a result of the power) it's about amazing handeling with the quattro option, and a very high level of fun. Chipped or unchipped the 1.8T qt will blow away most any other sedan around a tight corner. Stop thinking...chip your cars, it's great. I vote for the Neuspeed. nic 04-02-1999, 08:10 AM I'm sorry but I have a hard time compairing Japanese cars with any European car.
