View Full Version : is the trip computer worth it? Zack 03-22-1999, 06:03 PM what exactly does this one do? i cant find much about
its features without owning one.
zack awaiting delivery
JT 03-22-1999, 06:24 PM Steve S. 03-22-1999, 06:38 PM Get the sport steering wheel though...A MUST.
Steve S.
97 2.8QM Sean G 03-22-1999, 07:01 PM As an owner of a car with the trip computer I find that I use it all the time. Maybe I'm just more into gadgets. I usually keep it on the current fuel economy reading as I drive.
As mentioned below, the trip computer also incorporates the "auto check" system which gives you information about the car such as burnt out brake/taillights etc.
Here is the link to the trip computer FAQ: Trip Computer FAQ
Sean
97 1.8Tqm

Sean's A4 Page

Bob.1 03-22-1999, 07:06 PM A friend of mine got one with her A6. She said she actually found it annoying because if you don't keep it set it will start displaying erroneous and wrong information in regards to gas mileage, etc. Sounds like an expensive gadget to me... Wesley Walls 03-22-1999, 07:18 PM John Belushi 03-22-1999, 08:01 PM I had the equivalent of a trip computer on my BMWs..and just didn't see
the added benefit if it costs $250 MORE dollars. Now, go play with
your veg-a-matic.
John Belushi 03-22-1999, 09:10 PM Ever think that your car is getting really bad mileage and wonder if there is some sort of problem? Well, several people on this forum have had that happen. ("I'm only getting 15 mpg and I don't know if I should take it in or not") If these people had the trip computer, they would be able to take the car out, drive it at a constant speed (like 60 mph) and see if it gets the same mpg as it did in the past at that speed. People with just a little bit of imagination can use the computer as a simple tool to indicate whether everything is OK or not.
If (when) gas gets really expensive, it can be a learning tool. It will show you just where and how you can improve your driving technique to use less gas.
Couldn't car less, or don't comprehend the above? Well, don't get the computer option, but don't whine to the forum about mysterious poor mileage. Ruben 03-22-1999, 09:29 PM I would think this would be very helpful at times. donp 03-23-1999, 03:05 AM I find it very useful for Miles to empty and MPG.
http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/chicane/175/info/display/tripdisp.htm

Trip display info

Steve S. 03-23-1999, 03:50 AM I understand your point...but I can also tell what is going on with my car without a trip computer....I always get bad gas mileage cauz I drive like a banshee.
Steve S.
(aka John Belushi) sdtagw 03-23-1999, 04:27 AM Sean G 03-23-1999, 04:52 AM Thanks for the defense of the pro-trip computer camp but it wasn't necessary. As Steve pointed out, we're very good friends and he was just trying to be funny. Even friends can have differing opinions occasionally. :-P
Sean
97 1.8Tqm randall (gadget MAN!) 03-23-1999, 05:04 AM the vehicle diagnostic is usefull:
1/ wonder if u are almost out of washer fluid?
2/ wonder if running lights are blown?
3/ gas mileage?
for the ~$300 get it.

1996 a4 2.8 qm
(without trip)
Point/Counterpoint 03-23-1999, 05:50 AM Steve S. 03-23-1999, 06:03 AM Now that we are totally off subject....a friend of mine from college married Chevy Chase....you ar e right about it being Dan and not John...I just knew Dan was still alive and I would be more credible as John Belushi doing postings from the netherworld.
Steve S.
97 2.8QM < - Audi content Josh 03-23-1999, 06:20 AM Josh 03-23-1999, 06:22 AM Andy Hedin 03-23-1999, 07:24 AM Ignorant w/ computer 03-23-1999, 07:45 AM now can it tell me what the problem is?
- Bad Gas
- Fouled Plugs
- Need a tune-up
- Tire Pressure Low
- Need a chip =)
NNOOOOOO!!1 ChrisW 03-23-1999, 07:58 AM Steve S. 03-23-1999, 08:58 AM Use to be Janie Thomas, I think.
