I can't believe how much of a difference that little K03 turbo makes on the 1.8T. My turbo died about a month or so ago. The car was unbelievable slow. Passing was just plain dangerous. Anyway, I just got my car back from the dealer yesterday. It took them a week to get a new turbo and install it. My baby is back! I'm a little surprised though. I haven't chipped the car or driven it excessively harsh. I've been following this forum for almost 2 years now and don't recall many blown turbos. Anyone else have any other knowledge on how often these little compressors die? I'm assuming I had a bad one or something happened recently. All I know is that I'm glad it's covered by the warrenty now. Next time, if there is one, I may just need to upgrade to the K04. Maybe my wife will buy the upgrade as a cost saving idea because it will last longer!!
-RobC
97 1.8TqMS Silver and Re-turboed!
Hi,
Im a little concerned about the wastegate and whether the dealer would blame a chip (im about to chip) as an excuse NOT to replace a wastegate rod even though it happens in non-chipped cars. Could you tell me the following please?
a) at how many miles this occurred
b)whether you're chipped and by whom
c)what was the dealer's response in dealing with the situation whether or not you were chipped
thanks!!!
-steve
a) at how many miles this occurred
My wastegate rod broke at 28,000 miles. I had installed a Wett 1.0 bar chip 5,000 miles earlier (22,000 miles)
b)whether you're chipped and by whom
Wetterauer 1.0 bar chip
c)what was the dealer's response in dealing with the situation whether or not you were chipped
I swapped back to my stock chip (thank you socket!) and brought it in to my dealer to be looked at. They confirmed the broken wastegate rod and a new turbo unit was installed under warranty. Dealer did not & still does not know my car is chipped. I'm now @ 33,000 miles (I put my Wett chip back in the car almost immediately after getting the new turbo.
Andy Hedin
'97 A4 1.8Tqms, Wett 1.0 Bar Chip, ABT Filter, Euro Headlights....
