Hi all -- My '99 1.8Tqms has just under 2K miles on it. I notice that even when warm, the 1st to 2nd shift seems a bit tight (expecially when revving higher), just not quite as smooth as the other shifts. Will this change as my tranny gets broken in? Thanks in advance...
BDW

I now have 8000 miles on my A4 1.8TQMS. The manual is now smoother than new. However, it is not what I would call perfect. I found a technique that helps. Normally when I shifted I actually pulled the shifter to the left while going 1 to2. I found if I pulled straight back, with no side force, the shift is much smoother. Hope it helps.
Roger

Mine has 4K miles, and it is getting better. Double clutching and deliberate shifting helps too.
Regards
-Glenn

What bugs me is the throttle being
held open; much more so then my
other car (93 vw) which makes the
shift slower for me.... Do you
notice that as well? On the VW,
let off the gas and the engine speed
drops right off making snappy shifts
easier IMHO
julie
Julie -- I notice the same about the throttle. I think (not sure) I've read here that the turbo has some part in that, somehow keeping revs higher even when off the gas between shifts. I was down to my 1.8Tqms and a 323i manual, and the 323i REALLY was rev crazy between shifts, even when it seemed like I was totally off the gas. My '99 Maxima SE didn't do it at all. Hopefully, we'll get used to it!

BDW

The reason the RPMs hang for a little during shifts has to do with the engine computer continuing to add fuel for a bit. This is done to reduce emissions. I wish there was a way around it because it bugs the hell out of me, too.
Jim Meyer
'98.5 2.8QMS
