I would like to add a navagation system like the Alpine CVA-1000. Has anyone attempted this before. I have a 99 1.8 with bose. Does the existing radio have to be removed. How well does the system work with radio, will all controls be accessible through CVA as well as radio controls through the existing factory head unit. I was thinging of putting the CVA unit through the wood paneling to the left side of the passenger seat. Any input appreciated.
Thanks
You may also want to look at Clarion's AutoPC (I think) system. You basically just replace the head unit (Bose only supplies the speakers, your head unit is made by Panasonic). It's actually kinda neat... you should check it out.
BTW, I wouldn't drill, tap or bolt anything onto the dash or your wood panels.
Cris
The head unit for the AutoPC is not a replacement unit that will fit right into the slot of your old head unit. This unit also runs Windows CE wich is a reason not to buy it. You can check it out at http://www.autopc.com
I was under the assumption that most A4 owners will understand the need of a spacer/adapter thing. As for the Windows CE comment,... I agree with you there!
MS Windows anything is a love hate relationship.... love the money involve with working with Windows, hate the fact that it is MS.
Cris
I worked on an alternative that did not use the AutoPC (which Delphi Delco used in their AutoPC demo car), the pointer is http://www.alphaworks.ibm.com/networkvehicle/about.html
I was out at the Convergance98 conference and talked to the VW electronic EEs and got into some detail on the future plans.

This is offered in Europe and was also seen on the Allroad.
NeilM
Very cool. I saw the navigation system in the Allroad on motorweek. It looked simular to the one posted. It was able to pick up broadcast TV while the car wasn't moving. AoA are you listening? Please make the system available for the states.
