Check out this rear deck. Do you think it will work? I haven't seen the deck up close so I don't know if there are structural supports that will get in the way.
Anybody have a solution for mounting 8" subs, 6.5" mids, and surface mount tweeters all on the rear deck? Will the rear deck become unstable with that many holes in it? Where else can I put subs without sacrificing all my trunk space. Boxes are out (or so my girlfriend says). Anyone mount the subs up against the rear seats?
Looking for ideas...
--Ian.

I have a sealed enclosure in my trunk and it hardly takes up 25% of the space. You're going to have to cut some serious metal when you try to stick those free-airs in the rear deck. I can't tell you what kind of bass you're going to be producing with those 8" subs but, from other cars that I've seen I think you're better off with some sort of enclosure in the trunk. Just my $0.02.

I run 2 JL Audio 12W6's in my car in a sealed box, i'd say it takes up more then 25% of my trunk, but not more then 50% - maybe around 35-40%. The amount of drilling and cutting you would have to do to the rear deck to prepare it for that kinda setup would be irreversible (i've had to take speakers out of the rear deck, and no, it's not really hollow), and also would be a compromise to the structural integrity of the car. On my last car, i sawed out a 5" x 10" hole for a bandpass box - after about 20,000 miles the car creaked everytime i went in and out of a driveway. (This was a german car btw). So, on the whole, i don't really recommend hacking up the rear deck like the illustration that was provided...personally, the sloppiness of free-airs and cutting holes in your car isn't worth the marginal space savings of that setup (just my opinion). Go with the box, you'll like the bass a lot more.
HTH,
Edmund Louie
98 A4Q 30V

Skip the free airs. You will not get the sound you want. My Toby box takes up 60% trunk, but fantastic sound. I don't recommend this unless you're a little off the deep end, but enclose the subs, and you will be happy. My girlfriend said the same thing, but she loves the sound now.
