View Full Version : Heated Seat Etiquette

Here is a dilemma to stump Miss Manners:
What is the best way of dealing with the heated seats for passengers who are not familiar with them? My passengers normally do not turn them on themselves (since they may not be aware of them, or normally don't ride in cars with heated seats).
I see three possible options, all of which I have done:
1. Do nothing. I sit in my nice warm, cozy seat, and let the passenger be none the wiser.
2. Turn on the passenger's seat when I turn mine on. If if flip my seat up to six, I'll reach across and do the same for the passenger. This can be particularly amusing for passengers that are not expecting it!
3. Point out the heated seats to the passenger, leaving it to their discression. This is particularly a dilemma for repeat passengers. If they haven't turned on their seat, do they not want them on, or have they forgotton about it since the last time they were in the car?
Or maybe I am worrying too much about nothing! So what does everyone think about this?
Tom Halter
98.5 2.8 QM Pearl/Onyx

I think you've been watching too many Seinfeld re-runs! :-)
I go for option 2, sounds like the most fun! (I think I'm gonna try that one...hehe).
-Ash Silver 98.75 1.8TQMS

...you're passengers should be thrilled that you have consented to generously devote your time and resources to carting them around. Any additional effort to increase their comfort level is above and beyond, IMO.
For those who read the above and and not yet skilled in the art of feretting-out "tounge-in-cheek" remarks -> ;-)
Alex

I've noticed that on really cold days, the valets always park my car right in front!! Then, while I'm inside enjoying the fine dining, the valets are sitting in my car with the seat heaters on, and boy oh boy are they happy! In fact, they tip ME when I leave!
;-)
[more tongue-in-cheek]
On my GTI, I always flipped the passenger seat on when I did mine.

If it's a person of the opposite sex leave it off and offer to check and see if it's working. After confirming that it's not heating, apologize and sound suprised as you flip the switch. :)
Desperate times call for desperate measures... who said that?

Hold onto your hat. Ask them if they are cold and would like the seat warmed. Depending on the intensity of the reply, rotate the wheel accordingly.

Be careful how you phrase your inquiry...
Once on a trip to Sweden, a client whom I didn't know very well was giving me a ride back to my hotel in his BMW 7 Series. Along the way, he asked:
"Vood you like some heat in your seat?"
This made me feel very uncomfortable...
Regards
BB
I usually ask my passenger, "hey miss, it's cold out there, would you like some warmth to yer butt?" >;->
