Let see...the new NA S4 will be toting the autodimming mirrors...electric passenger seat....Homelink...xenon headlamps....do you think AoA should make these options available on the 2000 2.8? If so, how much would you be willing to pay. (In case youre wondering...I am bucking to get AoA to hire me and pay me for asking these questions. :-))
Or, should AoA keep these options only on the S4 to keep model designations more clear. One reason that they should keep them separate is to differentiate the two models...and hence the price difference....$32.5 - 35.8K for the 2.8QM....versus $38.6 - 44K for the S4. You have to get something for the additional $6-8K price difference (besides the engine)...dont you think?
What about the 17" wheel and tire package?....like the WMB 323 has for the sports package...What would you pay to upgrade from the 15" standard wheels on the base 1.8T? from the 16" standard wheels on the 2.8? I am guessing about $1,500 extra (if it was included as a sports package and came with sport springs (20mm drop)...sport shocks....and the sports steering wheel)
One thing I would like to see is a leather sport seat on the 1.8T? Anybody else?
Steve S.
97 2.8QM

BTW Xenon should be a $600 option on all A4's...I don't see why the size of your motor should dictate how well you get to see the road at night.

Hi Steve --
1. You mention a starting price of $38.6K for the S4. That's awful precise. Have you gotten more current (or formal) pricing info on the S4? Last I heard, the base price was "38ish".
2. Besides the Biturbo engine, the $6-8K price difference also gets you upgraded brakes (not available as an option on either the 1.8T or 2.8).
Scott D.
"wanting to see Nogaro Blue on an ACTUAL car"

Lurking on your board....
I'd like to see the S4 options on the A4 also. I'm torn between a new 328i and an A4 2.8 and some of the options available can make the decision. Like having leather standard and offering Xenon lights, or the walnut interior trim.
Has anyone seen the Alcantra interiors in person? Those look awesome! But which blue exterior matches the blue interior best???
:)
- Christine S, currently a Z3 owner, but both parents own Audi's (so am I allowed to lurk here??)

I am torn between the S4 and the 99.5 A4 for many of the same reasons that many of you are, but here are a few limitations that just bug me:
- Interior choices on the S4 are limited compared to the A4
- I want a 2.8 with blacked out window trim - why can't this be a delete option? It's standard on the 1.8 nad the S4!
- Why do I have to buy the whole cold weather package when all I want is the ski sack?
- How about the 6-speed as an option for the A4?
- How about the S4 brakes as an option for the A4?

Audi of America could really take a step forward if they would consider a similar approach to the EC market.
1) quattro GmbH - Factory "Individual" Options. A subsidiary of Audi AG will "custom" modify your model of choice. This can include anything from actual Onyx inlaid dash trim to green perforated Alcantera seating, to big wheels, to engine and chassis mods. When I visited Ingolstadt in July they had an A3 outfitted entirely in red. Down to the carpet, shift knob and steering wheel. Six speed tranny, 2.8l V6 and quattro. This before the 2.8, quattro, 1.8t were available stand-alone on the A3. Most of their "custom" jobs are somewhat less expensive...and more reasonable in appearance.
Because each and every audi is custom built on the factory floor according to your order, there's really no reason I can think of that AoA would not want to pursue additional mark-ups for such details. Hell, most of us here on the list realize our factory orders will already be taking 4 months to deliver. So the excuse about building "lot" orders clearly doesn't hold water. And because cars are built simultaneously for every different country, mass builds really are fairly unlikely.
AoA is practically at the "boutique" ordering concept already, why not market it ala EC and win more sales?
2) That said, the marketing genious of AoA considers such ideas as wood trim in the S4...an option not available on the EC S4. No carbon trim for the US. Why? Simply asking that question is what is so frustrating about the organization...
Derek Daily
90 CQ
00/01 S4 Avant?

I was just warming up to the idea of leatherette (after hearing good things from owners posted here) when I found out Sport Seats only come in cloth on the 1.8T. I'm planning on a 2000 1.8TQMS (waiting on the in dash CD), having the seats and arm rests redone in the (Opal Grey) leather from the 2.8, and ordering a set of the Grey Birdseye Maple wood trim from the S4.
But Marketing majors want numbers, right? As a prospective 1.8TQ buyer I would pay:
$2000 for a Leather interior + Sport Seat combo (even more attractive with a power driver's seat; add 4 position MEMORY and I'd almost buy the option without the car)
$200 maybe for autodimming mirrors (assuming this is for outside mirrors and the interior mirror autodim has an seperate on/off switch)
Not really interested in electric passenger seat, Homelink, xenon headlamps
$1500 for a sport package including the S4 wheels would be very tempting. However, the wheels are a very distinctive exterior cue that says "S4". If I could afford an S4 right now I'd probably argue against offering the same wheels on other cars, since if you really need them you will be able to order them from the parts counter anyway.
J.T.L.
90 CQ 196k and climbing, red/grey leather (power w/. memory)
74 Super Beetle
72 Datsun 510
Future: 2000 1.8TQms

Especially as Audi Australia are offering leather and metallic for US$900, and thats on the 180hp 1.8Tq or the 150hp 1.8T and A3 1.8T!!!
But you'll have to settle for the 99 bodyspec, no 99.5's here till the end of the year. But what would you rather have, 180hp and leather from the factory or 99.5 bodyspec?
Graham

Nogaro Blue matches the Alcantera (synthetic suede) seating backs.
I have a feeling few people even read these posts past a day, but anyway...
FWIW, the Nogaro Blue is very, very similar in hue to the "old school" royal blue offered on 911s just before the body change. The audi royal blue has a layer of the pearl treatment in the process, similar to the typical "white pearl" seen on a number of audis. IMO, the pearl effect is much less apparant in the Nogaro.
If anyone has this years Car and Driver Page a Day calendar...the 1995 911 C2 on Jan 13 is very, very close.
Derek Daily
90 CQ
