My 98 A4 goes through allot of oil. Does anybody elses? I'm afraid that I have a bad ring in the engine or something. I over stretched my budget to buy this car despite the bad resale value. I am afraid that I'm looking at a nightmare.
Anybody else having the same problem?
I've gone through 4 quarts in 3 months. There was no oil on the dipstick when I checked on a whim. The oil light never came on either.
Is this job security for the service department?

My 98.5 30vQTipWett doesn't burn any oil as far as I can tell. I check weekly and over the last 5000 miles the oil level hasn't budged. You don't mention whether you have the 2.8 or 1.8 car... nor did you mention mileage, maybe there is a difference? I have had three turbo cars before my A4 and two burned oil and one didn't (my RX-7 turbo burned a lot of oil, but not 4 quarts in 3 months!)
Alex

This may make a difference. My brother switched to synthetics and now burns oil at 3 times the pace of regular. Also, if your oil is really clean it's tough to tell by looking at the dipstick the exact oil level.
I'd have it checked.
Good luck,
Mick
98 2.8 qm

Three months means nothing, how many miles? Why are you concerned about resale value, Audi is putting over 60% residule values on thier lease programs. This means they feel the car will be worth over 60% of MSRP after 36 months. This is very good, not to mention the cars popularity, there will always be people who want a $30,000.00 car that can'nt afford a new one.I was in the car sales business for 11 years and am not at all worried about resale. One Qt.in 1800 to 2000 miles is within normal range, even if it does seem like too much.

You don't mention which engine you have, how many miles you drive, or how many miles on your car, but...
When I first got my 2.8, I went through about three quarts of oil for the first 5000 miles. After that, the engine settled in, and now uses a quart every 3-4000 miles.
Based on my experience (and others that I have read here), it can take a while for the engine to break in.
Tom Halter
98.5 2.8 QM Pearl/Onyx

At most it's burned 1/2 a quart. Dipstick reads up to the top of the hatched area or beyond....

I think I heard this from my Auditech. In any event, get it checked out...you may have a leak.
Steve S.
97 2.8QM

I lease my car, thats why I talked about Residule values, here is the rock I came out from,.1) I was a sales manager for 6 years at a Jeep dealer that took many nice cars in trade. 2) Before that I sold Fords in New Canaan CT. as a salesman,3) Before that, I was an F+I man,( finance and insurance) for a VW store. Total time in the field 11 years. I also worked for a leasing Comp. that leased Porsche and Ferrari and I bought a total of three used 911's from them. Over the years I have bought and sold about 400 cars a year, how many have you bought and sold? Since I lease I do not have to keep my cars a LONG time, but I'm sure your resume is not in Auto sales. By the way I worked in that field for the love of cars, my family interest afford me the choice to do what I like. My buy out is 17,000 on my 97 1.8 TQM. It will have about 30,000 miles and I'm sure it will be well worth that amount, but since you seem to think your the expert then you should lease too and you will not have to worry about resale or making stupid insulting comments toward people.
