I was cleaning my car this weekend and moved the center arm-rest up.
After I was done, I tried to move it down but it wouldn't.
I panicked and drove over to the Audi dealer hoping there was someone with a clue. There isnt a dealer near my home and getting to one during the week is difficult, so since I was near a dealer saturday I drove over.
Well, they couldnt help me, but after I came out of shock from having something go wrong with my car I used my smart brain to analyze it a little more.
There is a pin that connects to the swivel portion of the arm that popped out of the adjustment button.
Using a small screw driver I popped the pin back into place by pressing down on it (in the same direction the button would normally go. Then I was able to move the arm rest down and the pin popped back into its usual place.
I was wondering why this may have happened and and I want to blame the coin holder.
Because it fits so snuggly in to its place I wonder if it doesnt slightly bend the front of the arm rest just enough so that the pin has a little more motion allowing it to pop out.
Jim

The arm rest "locks" into place when you put it all the way up. To release it, you should press the long button that you normally use to adjust it.
I'm not sure, but it sounds like you didn't try this first.
I have noticed that if loose change gets in the hinges of the lid, it is a pain in the butt to get them out. So, be careful out there.
-henri

You have to press the button all the time. But the plastic button is only the fascia for a metal button with a pin that connects to something that runs down the drivers side of the arm rest to the hinge/swivel at the base of the arm rest. If the pin comes out, no matter how hard you press the adjustment button, it wont matter because its no longer connected to the hinge at the base.
What I meant by the coin holder was that when you put it in there it presses on the sides of the arm rest causing them to bulge a little giving just enough room for the pin to pop out. Once the pin pops, the adjustment button is useless.
