View Full Version : AoA optimistic re A4 acceleration times?

Based on Car & Driver's recent comparison tests involving the A4 1.8T and 2.8 quattro models, it appears that Audi is 0.3 seconds optimistic with their claimed times of 8.1 and 7.1 seconds, respectively. Hopefully this is not the case with the upcoming 2000 S4. I would hate to see a 6-speed twin-turbo S4 hit 60 mph in the high 6's!
Now, I realize that some other publications have obtained close to the factory claimed times, but C&D seems to get very fast times with BMW's (6.4 seconds for 328i, 7.2 seconds for 323i), but slower times with A4's. Maybe someone at Audi needs to show them how to properly launch a quattro car!
I think these 0-60 times are so dependent on the driver they are hard to take too seriously. Take for example the CarPoint site, where Daniel Heraud's numbers (in Specs and Stats) are enough to make both 323i and A4 1.8 owners squirm. (He loves both cars and gives them same total point score). Hold your hearts, Bimmer folks, he has 323i manual doing 0-60 in 8.4 secs and quarter in 16.2; A4 1.8 TM (no Quattro tested) in 8.4/16.5. I've seen other tests that put the 323i manual in the mid and high 7 sec range, and the 1.8TQMS as quick as 7.8 (unchipped, of course). The point is, there is no consistency and who cares anyway? Both cars are quick, fun to drive and have other excellent qualities that have us making excuses just to go out and drive them around. By the way, I've had my Laser Red 1.8TQMS for about 10 days...is it normal for an otherwise fairly sane, 34-year-old guy to open the door out to the garage several times a night just to look at admiringly at said A4? My wife thinks I'm nuts (maybe she's just jealous?)

"is it normal for an otherwise fairly sane, 34-year-old guy to open the door out to the garage several times a night just to look at admiringly at said A4?"
Perfectly normal. I've had my A4 for 15 months, and I still do the same thing. Going into stores, I look back in the parking lot at it, too. The car just makes you turn your head to stare. I think it has that effect on bystanders too.
G. Hale
'98.5 2.8 Pearl QMS
Sane. Of course it's sane. I'm 5 days into my new Quattro and I've washed it 3 times. I wipe the wheels everyday. As far as acceleration goes, the Maxima out performs both the 3 and the A4 0-60, but which one do you want to drive to the store or be seen in.

These two 10 yr olds just keep coming back. They always respond like morons and do nothing but trolling.
Ignore them.
If anyone is to be banned/censored, it should be these two sophomores.
Are you losers taking debate class in high school? Practicing your technique on the internet?
Go home to mommy.
Darryl

Check any magazine from England or even germany and you will see that the numbers that BMW post in the USA are not real.
Same magazines have A4 2.8QM at 7.3 sec and the 1.8T between 8 and 8.3 seconds.

I've owned mine since August of 97 (1.8TQMS). I still look at it all the time. The cars design is THAT good.

Why so much hatred Darryl? I already apologized for the post the other day and my brother and I have every right to post and do not need to be "censored" as you suggest. Freedom to express one's opinon is what a forum like this is all about.
Every once in a while, somebody will get out of line (to be be fair, I will name myself as a person guilty of this a few days ago) and you guys will flame him to ashes. Not a problem when it is deserved. I do not see your point of writing a very immature post using such names as "dork" when referring to an auto enthuisast who does not agree with you.
Please be nice and do not take cheap shots at Ali. You guys did your share with me a couple of days ago and all I did was say that I was out of line. If anything is worthy of censoring, it is post of people who directly take personal attacks at people that differ in opinions than you.
Respectfuly,
Alex
PS: If you flame this post, that shows your ignorance Darryl.
