My wife this morning ordered two spare keys for our '96 Audi A6Q. Remembering that I nearly sat down last time I heard the price, I called the dealership. The key is the square kind, with the cut engraved in the middle of the key.
I was told that ONE spare key was $132, or $168 with a transponder (I assume the IR emitter). That seems absolutely REDICULOUS! Is there no alternative? Also I am upset that the parts department did not tell my wife the price up front - I can't imagine that most people don't get sticker shock.
I understand that this key may be more expensive to cut that your standard key, but this seems a little far fetched. I assume that these locks are more theft proof that regular locks (they better be). Are there electronics in the keys? If so, shouldn't they offer a cheaper backup?
henrik

Linda @ Carlsen Porsche Audi...or Mark/Barry at Clair Parts Express should be able to beat that price....Linda's number is 650-856-6300 (talk to Linda only). IMPORTANT: Mention the QList or Quattro List...she gives good discount :-)
Steve S.
97 2.8QM
P.S. My car is at Carlsen right now... gettin fixed :-(
A folding key is $66.60 and the remote portion is $46.71. The key is cut at the same place that your dealer orders it from, and for much less money.

that's why they're so expensive

And the parts finally came in to change the gasket between the transmission and engine block. The labor to fix this small oil leak...was over 6 hours. While he was there "Mr. Super Shuper" also changed my timing belt...just because he wanted to. The A4 sure does look funny with the front bumper removed and the drawer section (including the radiator) pulled out that 6 inches. It should be done by 2pm today...wish me luck.
Hey, I got a Buick Century as a rental car, for free. Man, am I moving up in the world or what?
Steve S.
97 2.8QM
They are very helpful and will go way out of their way to make sure things get done correctly and that your order gets to you quickly.
Mark (98.5 2.8 QMS)

Has anyone bought an A4 from Clair (or any other eastern Mass dealer)? Comments? I bought a Saturn from them 7 years ago, but not sure that counts.
Yours could cost more if Euro-spec with the immoblilizer system. Also doesn't the A6 have different keys that sets the preprogrammed seat and mirror settings for different drivers? If so, another cost factor here.

Yes, they are expensive. That price sounds about right for 2. Your wife should have asked, or at least the parts guy should have warned her.
And only Audi can get the keys, they send away to the regional parts warehouse where there is a keycutter.
