I just purchased my first 1.8T and am crazy about it. The dealer offered the option to install Daytime Running Lights and I bit.
When I got the option installed, all that happens is the main headlights go on at full intensity with the ignition (lame AND annoying). My research in the A4 archives and the manual leads me to believe that this is NOT Audi spec. Lights should be on at reduced intensity, taillights and sidemarkers on too. I've also heard that the DRLs are activated when you release the parking brake.
How are A4 DRLs supposed work? The archives has a procedure to disable DRLs on Canadian models. Does anyone know if the reverse procedure is possible to actuate DRLs correctly on an American A4? I've Emailed Audi for the DRL spec, I haven't received a response yet.
Thanks in advance,
Jeff

Most DRL's (including the ones installed on VW's) only illuminate the headlights at some reduced power. Tail-lights and front corner-markers do not light.
City lights (as used in Europe) would illuminate all the lights, but they have to be turned on manually. They would, however, only illuminate the headlights at reduced power. And most cars with city lights would not illuminate the front corner-markers. They only illuminate when you turn your turn-signals on.
Sounds like you got some sort of aftermarket "add-on". My guess is that it's not even an Audi part they installed...some sort of "universal" kit that could be installed on any number of vehicles.
Andy Hedin
'97 A4 1.8Tqms, Wett 1.0 Bar chip, ABT Filter, Valeo Euro Headlights....
I was the one who wrote the FAQ to removce DRL.
Only this week I got the wiring schematics for the A4.
It has a dedicated section for the DRL wiring. By the looks of it, the lighting system is quite different to the US sepc A4's. To rewire it is very difficult with lots of hacking.
On my A4 the DRL's come on as soon as the ignition is turned on and is cut out when cranking. The parking brake has no effect. Also I did not really notice any difference in the lighting intensity btween DRL and full headlights. It is almost like the switch is not required!

Hey Jeff,
Look take a look at the DRL disabling instructions, then remove your knee bolster to see if the relay sockets associated with the DRL system are there. If they are, then just add the required relays. If not (I suspect they're not), then there is no DRL circuit in your U.S. spec car to activate, and the DRL installed by your dealer is an aftermarket unit.
My DRL included (before disabling) the parking lights (corner lights and taillights) as well as the low beams at about 80% brightness. They turnon as soon as you turned the ignition on, not activated by the parking brake.
Hope this helps.
James Wu
A4 Club of Vancouver
1998 Black/Onyx 1.8tqa

A4 Club of Vancouver
