And like keying one panel wasn't enough, I've got a scratch on the front quarter panel, front door, rear door, and rear quarter panel!!
Steve S. - I may be looking up your friend in Redwood City!
Just needed to vent.

Sorry to hear it...but like I said Jack is VERY cool. Give him a call, and tell him I sent you...probably get you a decent price if you do.
BTW, he was at Sears Point yesterday, I think, driving a Formula Atlantic car on track.
Steve S.
97 2.8QM
p.s. You weren't at Stanford shopping center by chance?

I was just thinking about this the other day... would someone of that nature (who don't like other people's nice cars) *more likely* to do bad things to
car A: a shiney stock car
or car B: a shiney modded (wheels, body work..etc) car.
Assuming that person is faced with these 2 cars: would he/she say to themselves that car B is owned by an enthusiasts (stereotyping: rice burners)... cool stuff/mods.
OR
car A: Plain jane owner with money to burn (stereotyping: BMWs)...snobby-ness.
I mean, if faced with a Viper and a MB S class parked side by side... which car do you think this person will *more likely* key? Maybe both?
I don't know... just my theory.
Cris
I think they might feel more of a connection with the owner of a high performance (e.g. Viper) or modded car and be less likely to key it.
My 2 cents.

I'm wondering if I should just wait a year and collect some more scratches and dings and get them all fixed at the same time. The keying is to the primer, but not to the metal.
I was just telling someone yesterday that I was amazed that the sides of my car were immaculate. Only dings were on the bumpers. I didn't knock on any wood (the lesson I've taken away from this).
Oh, and also that the city is not the best place to have a new car...

My wife's 318i got hit about six months ago in a mall parking lot. Several large scratches on each of: hood, driver's front quarter panel, and driver's side front and rear doors. Looked like it was done with an Xacto knife b/c there were some shallow superficial slices in one of the tires also. Cost us $250 deductible but cost our insurance co. about $1100 on top of that.
Left a report with the local police who said the recently caught a kid in the neighborhood keying cars. Kid's explanation was that since his family can't afford nice cars he hates people who have them.
Best story I know on keying: someone I know was sitting in a brand new MB E-class when he hears a scraping noise. He looks up and someone is walking by the car keying it. He jumps out and yells at the guy, who runs to his beater and peels out. Smart move, trying to escape from a crime in a car registered to yourself at your own address . . . .
Too bad about your car. I would say look at the bright side but I don't think there ever is one.
Sorry to hear that. Ain't it the worst? I got my '90 Legend coupe keyed twice last year. First one in SF on passenger side from door to tail lamp. A couple of months ago, same panels on driver side while in SJ. Had a 'for sale' sign on it at the time. Could it have been a prospective buyer trying to get a discount? Who knows...just can't stand people that don't respect others' hard earned property. $100 deductible took care of it but it's never as good as new.
dt, currently shopping for an a4

I just went out and keyed 4 BMW's (3 3-series and 1 5-series) in retaliation. I hope you feel a little better.
