Just picked up my '99 A4 1.8 Quattro (Laser Red, absolutely gorgeous). The car is quick enough (I have the 5-speed and a wife who actually loves to drive a stick! Am I lucky, or what?) After break-in I'm considering chip tuning it. I live in Central Indiana, and I found a German-based company located in Valparaiso called Wetterauer, which offers their "Alpha" chip ($495), which would boost HP to 200 and torque to 236 lb feet. That's plenty of extra pop for me. Two questions: Does anybody have experience with a Wetterauer chip (it's a plug in type), and can anyone offer me advice about chip tuning in general? My service manager says Audi tends to "look the other way" on chips as they pretain to engine warranty issues as long as the HP is kept to 200 or less. Is this true? Has anyone had really bad experiences from chip tuning? I'm confident the car would have no problem handling this upgrade, but I just don't know that much about it. Anyway, I've only had this car a week and it already feels as comfortable as an old shoe. I love it. Glad I bought it instead of the new 323i, thought ithe A4 was a more well-rounded car despite losing out in the engine department. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can give me.

The Wett chip has almost a cult-like following among frequentors of this forum. If you search "Wett" in the archives, you'll be reading for days! There's always a lot of forum traffic about the various chips available to A4 1.8T owners - lots of good opinions and observations, but no definitive 'winner'.... The good news is that the majority of chip owners are very satisfied with their choice. Other chips besides Wett to consider - Neuspeed, TAP, MTM, Garrett, Autothority.
BTW, A4.org members get $100 off the Wett chip.
Me, I've been debating chipping for the last few months and plan on taking the plunge in the Spring (when the snow tires come off). Right now, Neuspeed is edging out the others purely on the basis of value.
Good luck,
Chris L.
98 1.8TQS

I have the Garrett chip now for 4 days and I love the power it gives me all the way up to 6000 rpm (7100 is where the limiter goes up to but I don't need to take it up much past 5500) He really knows his chips and programs. my 2 cents though.

http://www.giacusa.com/

The only chips that I haven't heard anything bad about are the ones produced by TAP. I've heard that all the others "ping" at times. This would annoy me.

I live in Central Indiana, and I found a German-based company located in Valparaiso called Wetterauer, which offers their "Alpha" chip ($495), which would boost HP to 200 and torque to 236 lb feet.
I strongly recommend the Wett chip, especially since you live close to their US location. Of course, I'm biased towards Wett cause that's what I've got (BTW, I love it!)
can anyone offer me advice about chip tuning in general?
I'd suggest reading the archives for starters...there is tons of info out there about chips. Unfortunately, there is no consensus on which is the "best" chip. The best chip for your driving style might be different than one that would be suitable for me.
My service manager says Audi tends to "look the other way" on chips as they pertain to engine warranty issues as long as the HP is kept to 200 or less. Is this true?
Never heard that before but some dealerships seem to be more "chip friendly" than others.
Has anyone had really bad experiences from chip tuning? I'm confident the car would have no problem handling this upgrade, but I just don't know that much about it.
I've got nothing but good things to say about my experiences with the Wett chip. Great customer service + great product = miles and miles of grins. Most people on this board believe that the 1.8T engine was severely de-tuned so as not to compete with the 2.8. In other markets, the 1.8T engine is available from the factory with 180hp and is capable of even more.
Andy Hedin
'97 A4 1.8Tqms, Wett 1.0 Bar Chip, ABT Filter...

Keep loading (or reloading) pages on this forum until you get the Wetterauer banner add, then click that to go to the Wett site. This takes you to a special page on the Wett site where you can sign up for the discount.
Welcome to the club
98 1.8TQMS
