Anyone seen this in the November issue of Consumer Reports the recall is as follows
Engine backfire during cold start could dislodge and break air screen in airflow meter and prevent engine from slowing fully when accelerator is released.
Dmak 1.8TQMS

I called my dealer today and they told me that the recall was only for 98 A4 2.8's. So your 1.8T is fine, at elast this is what my dealer said, if anyone else has heard otherwise please let me know!
Brant
98.5 1.8TQM
It's really no big deal. The dealer installs a plastic ring that seats against the screen inside the airflow meter. It's less than a half hour job. Everyone that's affected should have already received their recall notice. And some people who get the notice don't actually need the fix. Some cars (like mine, mfgr. date June 98) already have the redesigned part. Since most cars will never backfire, they would never experience the problem anyway (and a backfire wouldn't necessarily dislodge the screen). If you are affected by this recall, have it checked out, but it's nothing to panic over.
