I've been diggin in the archives and I noticed people complaining about a "boing" noise from the neuspeed RACE springs while turning.... has this problem been addressed by Neuspeed and fixed? Or should I stay away from them entirely and just get the H&R race springs??
Ian G
1998 Santorin/Ecru 1.8tq Wett 1.0bar and soon to be lowered...

My Neuspeed springs / Bilstein shock combo is just peachy. I've had none of the spring binding noises that Sean G reported. I had mine installed just after Sean did his, so I was leary as well, but have had no funny noises or odd performance. It's now been a few months, maybe 7,000 miles, an autocross and some track time later and I wouldn't go back.
Minor note: at some point Neuspeed changed the terminology on the springs they offered. They came out with Race springs, then renamed them as "Sport" springs while introducing a new "Race" line that was even stiffer (lower too?).
The springs on my A4 are noted as "Race" on the car, but the box says "Sport" and model number on the springs themselves correspond to the "Sport" model now offered.
Sharon
'97 1.8Tq etc.

I set my springs higher using the Bilstein grooved shocks. It seems that they don't perform as well (and experience that "boing") when they're not set at the recommended drop of 2 inches.
Now, this is mostly anecdotal evidence but it seems reasonable. Sharon and Ron A. has their Bilsteins set for the "standard" drop while Sean and I used the next higher groove (about 0.5 inches higher). We didn't want to drop ours that low because of road hazards, snow, etc. In the end, we switched to the H&R sport springs, which have less of a drop, and are happy with the results.
Since you are looking at the H&R race springs, you could really go with either brand as they both result in similar drops. The difference is the Neuspeeds are variable/progressive rate while the H&Rs are linear. It depends on your preference, I suppose.
HTH,
Jim
PS: see also my response to your thread below.
The Eibach sport springs, and Pro springs, which would be similar if not the same thing as Nuespeeds are 200psi/220psi (I've been told),frt./rear. This is identical to the sport suspension in the front, a little stiffer in the rear. HR's race springs(coilovers) were 340/375psi, and are being updated to 400/460 psi. This is measured at 1"compression. Roland at HR told me this info. I am going to install Eibach/Koni's rated at 400/450psi, the Koni's are dbl. adj. for bump and rebound so I can take some of the harshness out of them...I hope. At least I won't have to worry about the sway bars moving very much.

H&R Sport springs are linear H&R Race are progressive!
Neuspeed has a 2.0" drop F/R
H&R Race has a 1.9" drop and a 1.5" in the rear.
JC M.
H&R Race Equipped

"H&R Sport springs are linear H&R Race are progressive!"
Hmm, that's not what the folks at H&R told me when I called. Plus, they gave me specs that indicated a linear rate (one value), not progressive one (a range).
Are the uppermost coils of your race springs closer together compared to the rest? That would indicate a progressive rate spring. If not, they're linear (unless there are two springs as in some coilovers).
"Neuspeed has a 2.0" drop F/R
H&R Race has a 1.9" drop and a 1.5" in the rear."
I was implying that those numbers are pretty close compared to those of the H&R sport springs (F 1.5", R 1.0").
Jim
I think you transposed your numbers: on the A4 the front springs are stiffer than the rears to handle the heavier weight up front.
The Neuspeed sport (formerly "race") springs compare to the H&R sports. Offhand, I don't recall the exact numbers that I got from Anthony at Greedspeed a while back, but they are similar.
Your specs on the H&R race are pretty much the one's I got from Tina a couple weeks ago: F 460, R 370.
BTW, these specs are for the 1.8T. The springs for the 2.8 might be different to account for the heavier engine.
Jim

I'm still thinking that the noise I experienced and which you have not is directly related to whether or not you have upgraded your swaybars to bigger aftermarket models. I had the stock non-sport suspension and had the noise. You have the Neuspeed swaybars and no noise. Others with the swaybars have had minimal noise but it did exist.
Sean
97 1.8Tqm
