well, as I said in a post a while ago, I will drive with the light on until something gives... Well something gave, the light it self. It has gone off for a week, came back on for a day or so, and now gone again...
I am really getting sick of the damn light. I am ordering my own VWtool and will check/reset the damn thing my self. Cheeper then spending 2 hours at the dealer every 2 weeks..
Any one else with same experiance?
Arie.
Sunnyvale CA.

Arie:
I bought my '99 A4 (2.8 quattro/tiptronic) last November, and the check engine light came on almost immediately.
The diagnostic computer at my dealer (Capilano VW Audi in North Vancouver, BC Canada) indicated "something to do with the fuel system . . ." . The tech re-set it, and the light went off - for about 3 hours.
I drove with the light on for several weeks while the dealer waited for a "fix" to come from Audi. Apparently, they finally got it, and after a 3-day stay at the dealer (see below), they had fixed what had caused it - a kink in a hose having something to do with fuel vapour recirculation in the fuel tank.
I imagine my fix has been posted on the Audi service network, so your dealer should be able to see it by now.
By the way, the principal reason for the long stay at the dealer was not that problem, but the "put your foot on the brake pedal" idiot light on the centre console (I have a 2.8 tiptronic). After about 5 seconds in "park" while idling, the light would flash, and click annoyingly. They never explained to me how that got fixed, but it is. And they had to disassemble half the car to do it!
I love the car, though - and since the bugs above have been fixed, it is flawless. The perfect car for Canadian winter driving.
Gordon

I could usually tie it to an event though and it went off by itself after a day or two. One time it came on after I gunned it to get by a truck. The second time it came on after I let the car sit for a week without driving it. I would give it a couple of days before calling the dealer unless it is blinking.
Mark (98.5 2.8 QMS)
The same kind of thing was happening to me last Fall...on and off, no particular pattern or inciting cause. Turns out something on one cylinder head was incorrectly assembled at the factory. The OBD was reading a discrepancy between the 2 cylinder heads, which would trigger the CHECK ENGINE light. It took a visit by the Audi factory rep to figure this out! Since they repaired it ( Oct.) I've had ZERO problems!!
I guess that's what can happen when you give those German Auto workers 6 weeks paid vacation!!
