I just did the rotation...and I got a very loud tire tread noise from the front tires. (BTW, they are the 245/45/17 Pirelli P7000SS tires). Could it be that the 1.5 degrees of negative camber in the front doesn't like the new found tread? FYI, the inside edge of the tires I just moved to the rear, was significantly worn.
Any ideas?
Steve S.
97 2.8QM

I got the same problem when i got the rotation done (front to back and back to front). All i could find out was because these tires are low profile, which means that they pick up road noise more easily, so even a slightest of irreularity (which might have developed when the tire was on the back) will be amplified when on the front. Since my tires were almost worn out i got new ones. But the dealership people said that if you drive it for 1000 - 2000 miles the tire will get regualr and thus the noise will go away. Good Luck, whatever you decide

I was very surprised to find out that Audi recommends tire rotation, as both Volvo and BMW (I've owned a couple of each) warn against it on the grounds that it screws up the handling. BMW says that, if you insist on rotating the tires (so they will last longer), you should do it at least every 3000 miles.
I'll see what happens at 5000 miles when my dealer rotates my tires...
Roger C.
99 1.8TQMS

Did you rotate front to back, or did do a diagonal "X" rotation?
It should be same side front to back.
Greg "S"

I had problem with my Porsche 924S when I went from 195/65/15 to 205/55/15... It was due to the added tire width and OEM suspension geometry - no alignment was done. I think such is your case here... going to a wider width. It will keep wearing out the inside edge (quite quickly I may add - $$$). I would suggest you either get the front end realigned with those tires, or switch back to the 225/45/17s and sell the remaining pair.
Good luck...
Cris
After rotating the tires, it felt like one of the wheels was bouncing at about 73 mph. I'm not sure, but it felt like it was the right rear. I switched the right side back and the vibration is gone. I would expect that if the wheel was so unbalanced as to cause bouncing, I would feel it in the steering wheel when it is mounted on the front, but that is not the case. Is there more damping on the front wheels than the rear?
Kyle

I had the exact same problem with my Pirelli P7000SS in 235/40 R17 size. The inside of the front and rear tires were worn, but mostly the front, and even more severe on the drivers front tire. Part of my problem was that the place I had the wheels installed did not install weights on the outer part of the wheel because there was not lip. They said that it wasn't required.... 'cause I asked about stick-on weights. But I think the main problem was that the car was not aligned properly with this size of tires. I took the car to the dealership for alignment and it was out of alignment. I was told that part of the alignment was done from the center of the tire, and with the wider tire, the center of the tire changes. I was worried that the alignment may not be covered under warranty since I had aftermarket tires/wheels.... but luckily it was, and takes about 2hrs. with their $25k dollar computerized digital alignment machine. I'm not sure if all dealerships have this, as my dealership said that they just bought it last year, but it is a special machine that they just use on their Audi's.... not their BMW's or Mercedes'.

I switched from the sport rims to the 5 spokes. Think that made a difference? I even brought the car in for wheel balancing and they did it reporting that they were out of balance. It didn't get any better. Hmmm.
David

The Hunter alignment machine you spoke of is a minimum equiptment tool for all dealers that want to sell any Audi with the 4 link ft suspension . Which is all of them now. It is not an Audi only machine will do any car, just a state of the art machine.
