I really do. Crap, my 5.0 Mustang GT back in 87 could do that. I gotta believe that it would be under 6.0 seconds. What are they doing?...wait a minute...is this for the tip? All I know is that the MTM chip suppliers would be getting a call from me WAY before delivery of the car.
Jim, you were told what you were told....but I gotta think something is screwy here.
Steve S.
97 2.8QM

I don't have a problem with the numbers. I am more concerned about what caused the drop in engine output and whether or not the engine is of the same design as the european version. If it is simply a matter of reducing boost to meet emissions, that would be one thing, but if the engines intake/exhaust and internals (cam etc.) are different, that would be another. With MTM already working on a 500hp version (according to an article in Audi Driver Magazine) of the 2.7l Bi-Turbo and Audi tuning up a 408hp version for the RS4, I just hope the engine in the US spec cars can handle those type of upgrades. Think about it for a minute. The 1.8T with a new turbo, chip, exhaust manifold and intercooler and running 12-14psi of boost can put out 90-100 additional hp. With two larger turbos, more boost, intercooler and exhaust, think of the possibilities of the 2.7l Bi-turbo. Come on- the hell with 0-60, the S4 is gonna be one fine machine, especially at under $40,000.

That is what I was thinkin...I thought..out of the box it would be probably just fine for my driving ability...but then as the itch returned in 6-9 months...I wanted to easily get 320 bhp (MTM chip and exhaust only?). Then I wouldn't be worrying about who was on my tail at the entrance to the straights. When Audi 5000s and URQs blow you away in the straights...it kinda get unnerving. Hopefully the US bound S4 will be just what the doctor ordered.
Steve "anxiously reconsidering the S4 because of new lower base price" S.
97 2.8QM

When I was at Audi in Inglostadt last month with the Quattro club I had the chance to ask the head of Brand Management a few questions. I specifically ask about the specs on the S4 and was told that the U.S bound car was set up a little differently as compared to the Euro spec version.
We get the same motor with 250 hp instead of 265 hp for the Euro car, however our torgue curve will be larger and will come in earlier then the European car. Audi did this to make our daily driving a little more fun. That is to say we can't go hope on the Autobahn. I will bet that the American car will have a 0-60 in the 5.5 second range.
You guys might be missing the point on how important torque is in the mix of things. The twin turbo 2.7 motor has loads of torque and that is what makes it so fast. I drove a Euro spec S4 in October and it was amazing to say the least. I put my name in the hat as soon as I got back.
Just a side note the Euro M3 has about 60 more horses than the S4 yet the S4 can match it due to the flat torque curve and lots of it. You guys are going to love this car.

Like Steve said, I believe Jim H. when he says that he was told the US S4 would do 0-60 in 6.5 sec. And I believe Scott G. when he relates what HE was told.
Unfortunately, the two don't jive. Scott G. wisely pointed out (since most of the posts ignored this) how it's the torque that really matters (unless you want to exceed 120 mph, and that's not a good idea here in the US). And he said that "our torque curve will be larger and will come in earlier then the European car."
Yet Jim H. reported a torque figure of 258 ft-lbs, well below the 295 of Euro-spec S4s. So maybe they're doing the gearing differently here. Or maybe...(ah, who knows).
Finally, the US car rags almost uniformly quoted 0-60 times for the 30v 2.8 that were SLOWER than the 7.1 quoted by Audi. So I have a hard time buying that AoA is being "conservative" with their estimate. As Dennis Miller says, "that's just MY opinion -- I could be wrong." Maybe Audi is turning over a new leaf.
I believe that European insurance companies HEAVILY penalize cars that exceed 193 hp. Could Audi be reporting conservate performance figures to help us keep our insurance rates down? Did I just let the cat out of the bag? Should I stop asking questions and just wait for AutoWeek's report from the New York Int'l Auto show in April, where the S4 will be "officially" unveiled (as reported by vwvortex.com)?

If you look at the specs for the old S4/6, I believe it did 0-60 in 6.5 seconds w/ 227hp and 260 ft-lb; and that's at 3800lb.
I question Audi's claimed 0-60 time is well. It all seems a little fishy.
DwayneC
94 S4 (0-60 in 5.7)

Audi claimed 6.2 seconds for 0-60 times for my 95 S6 (may she rest in peace). Of course, like DwayneC I was in the high fives with my chip and muffler upgrades......
Rick

I mean, in Japan all HP figures are something liek 250, to make the gov't feel all happy. But there are stock cars that make more. The automakers just all agreed on 250 as a quote. In Germany the cars can go 150, 160, 180 ... but they are revlimited to 150 mph. So Audi quotes 6.5. Maybe it is conservative. Maybe it isn't. But all this hemming and hawing about somethign not even on the boat here is silly. If it SHOWS Up with 6.5 times, THEN worry. Until then, it is like chicken little ... worried about nothing.

I too think the 6.5 second range for 0-60 is a bit slow, but who knows. they may have changed the gearing, exhaust... whatever... but think about what companies like Wetterauer, PES, MTM, TAP or Hoppen can do with TWO turbochargers on a 2.7L engine built to be "blown". They can double a 1.8T's 150hp output... think about starting at 250bhp!! A 350-400hp car might not be too far to reach or too expensive. With the S4, you're already starting w/17" wheels, upgraded sport suspension, a nice exhaust, etc... Maybe with a chip program and some other small mods this car will do 0-60 in 5.0?
My $.02
Jim

I have to disagree.
I would like to get a new car this summer. I like my 98.5 30V okay; but, not enough to keep it another year. I had been planning on an S4. If the S4 is going to have sub par performance, I would like to know as soon as possible so that I may at least have time to order another car for summer delivery.
