View Full Version : Secondary Intercooler Installation Raymond 10-28-1998, 01:04 AM Would anybody know how the Abt secondary intercooler is installed? Is it in series or in parallel?
Raymond Christian J. Long 10-28-1998, 04:39 AM There's definetely room in front of the radiator for an intercooler...but the plumbing that is required to add another intercooler adds turbo lag...doesn't it?
Christian rmz 10-28-1998, 06:16 AM Well I would imagine that removing the factory intercooler and replacing it with a larger front mount would be the thing to do.. You could just buy a thicker core for the factory location but the benefits may not be as good as a full front mount.. Hmm the DUAL intercooler setup is ok I guess but I would image that it complicates plumbing and routing of the piping.. From my experience with larger intercoolers on (300ZX's/Supras/Eclipses (I've tweaked em all) ) the simpler the intercooler routing the better and the 2 factors for intercooler selection.. 1st measure the pressure drop accross the system 2nd measure the temp reduction.. Once you have those figures you can estimate how much a larger intercooler will help with your current setup. So if you don't plan to run some serious boost/large turbo/large injectors.. a bigger intercooler may not return to you in horsepower what you put in to the system in $$$'s .. From play with turbos a while now.. The best IMHO approach to tuning is to test what you have now and then measure again after you install.. Take temps/G-tech etc etc .. EGT temps are critical to measure as well.. Also you can measure the airflow meter output to estimate power levels etc etc.. ehhehe oh well hope this helps.. I'll be doing this to my A4... and will post what I find.. Donnie 10-28-1998, 07:01 AM My next upgrade !
I'm not sure anyone sells a bolt-on front mount - you can check out Jeff Hsi's car for an incredible custom job ( $$$, I'm sure ). I'm planning an aluminum IC upgrade, swaps out stock, supposedly 40% more efficient than stock. A good IC upgrade should be NOTICEABLE by the seat o' the pants.
Donnie
Oh yeah, extra plumbing=extra lag, for sure. I'd use all hard pipes if I was going custom front-mount. JC M. 10-28-1998, 09:47 AM i ahve seen ABT's intercooler. it is a secondary one that resides right infront of the condensor unit. it is about 1.3 inches thick and about 2 feet long and 1 foot wide. the plumbing is not complicated it si very smooth. it also keeps the stock unit.
they (AMS) told me that it is not needed for stage 2 but some people did buy them and are having good results with the colder denser air. i my self is looking into buying this unit when my 3 years are up.
JC M. 1.8TQMS Stage 2 Lolo 10-28-1998, 11:48 AM He did this to his B5. More airflow for the stock intercooler.... steve moyle 10-28-1998, 12:41 PM x CHRISTIAN 10-28-1998, 12:49 PM I put "slits" (no, not sluts) in my A4. I vented it so that the wheel can't kick debris into the intercooler unless you were going in reverse real fast.
The cuts looked like this:
\________/
\________/
\________/
Then you just bend the plastic out some while blowing on it with a hot hair dryer (remember, I am not talking sluts here). When it cools, it will be bent out into the wheel well some, and offer venting with out exposing the intercooler to damage.
Christian Raymond 10-28-1998, 02:38 PM How was the plumbing done? I am trying to find the best way to install my ABT secondary intercooler. Michael 10-28-1998, 04:19 PM Paul Days 10-28-1998, 05:52 PM I live in the Dominican Republic and thinking of taking a 1.8T home with me. THe country is relatively hot, to spice things up I'm getting the Ram Air Filter, Neuspeed or T.A.P. Stage II Chip and a Scorpion Exhaust System. Since the country is hot I'm thinking of installing a T.A.P. Intercooler which runs for about $860.
Tell me about the ABT Secondary Intercooler, How much is it? |
