I have an offer on a 1998 A4 2.8 Quattro. Leather, CD, Sports Pckg, keyless entry, sun roof, Bose audio. Only options missing, heated seats and trip computer. Dealer invoice is about $31,600 and it has 4,100 miles on it.
What's a price I should expect to pay the dealer? I want to get a good deal, obviously, and I think they should come down from Invoice considerably. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

They should come down a good deal. with a demo it is likely that it was driven hard at the get go rather than broken in properly, also probably not warmed up when driven to high rpms. Should be able to bargain down by several thousand at least. They should throw in an extended warranty gratis.

if you're talking about a dealer demo it probably is a car driven by the owners or a car
that's driven by one of the managers. Also, if it's one of those "demos" it should not
have been registered. Consider a "demo" a NEW car with miles on it, if it HAS been
registered it's USED. The dealership probably won't sell the car BELOW invoice.
In Audi's there is no Holdback $$$ and usually no factory to dealer incentive money.
It's a risk, really. Either they sell it to you and LOSE hundreds to thousands of dollars
or they wait around for someone to claim that THAT car is their dream car, and probably sell it above invoice. From what I know, the difference between an Audi, BMW and
MERC and say a normal VW, Toyota or Honda is that the Audi/BMW/Merc all control
their dealership allocations tightly, so if the dealership sells all their cars near cost they
will have no problems selling any cars, but they will also have no inventory, and have made no money. Personally I think you should ask for about 600-800 above invoice.
Just my .02!
Terence
1.8tqms SantorinBlue K04!

I got a similarly equipped 98.5 for 900 over invoice. It was a "demo" with 150 miles on it and 99s were already in the showrooms. Didn't someone write that there were dealer incentives on 98s?
A 98 car with 4000+ miles on it? You gotta go under invoice on that!

To me, they're driven hard and not cared for mechanically; anybody can jump in and beat the bejessus out of them with still a cold engine. Besides, potentila customers or non-caring salesman could flog the daylights out of the tranny and burn up the clutch by not giving a damn.
Years ago, I test-drove a Euro sedan (OK, a Renault 12) with the salesman in the passenger seat. Driving up the Palisades Interstate Pkwy in NJ, I remember the salesman tugging at the wheel from the passenger seat , saying "Hit the storm drains - see how smooth it feels?" On initial drive, with stone cold engine, he was also hammering it like crazy.
Some other experiences:
'90 Eclipse - while driving, the tranny totally hung up ;couldn't shift into any gear. After I tried for about 5 minutes, salesman got in car, forced and jammed shifter until got it in 2nd to limp back to dealership
~79 Camaro - was a local Chevy dealer that had a nice collection of vintage 'Vettes in upper showroom. I drove my '76 911and parked it in the lot and proceeded to tour the 'Vettes. As I was exiting the building, salesman cornered me and tried to talk me into trading in the 911 for a Camaro. He had a Z-28 4-spd outside, so I figured I'd have a little fun. WelI, I hammered that car right from the start, and salesman never blinked (I even took him for a ride in the 911 to shut him up - it worked!)
'86 Acura Integra - another car that salesman pushed me into driving hard stone cold. I was used to Euro cars , not the extremely light shifter and clutch in the Acura. Well, on a downshift to 2nd, I missed and ground gears badly.
Obviously, I didn't buy ANY of these!
Just my experiences; all I can say is if you want to keep this car for a long time, WALK. For a little more, can buy a brand new vehicle that will be broken in properly and treated right.
