Well, I always like looking at others' pics, so here's mine.
The story: Custom Car Stereo in Houston did the plexiglass around the head unit. The switch on the left is the "plain-view" switch for the Clifford Concept 60 Alarm. On the right is the flushed LED for the alarm.
The EQ & trim piece I did myself. In the middle of this piece is the glass break sensor for the alarm. the trim piece is poplar wood (pretty dang hard)...coated in putty to get rid of the grain, then hit with gloss black lacquer. The flash from the camera seems to have brought out imperfections that you can't really see in most light. The EQ sits out about 1/2" cuz it's too deep & hits the airbag control module at the back. The story on the A4 pieces is that when I drilled the hole for the glass break sensor, it was a hair too small, so when I forced the sensor through the hole, i goofed up the paint just below the hole...since it was spray painted & I didn't want to tape up my whole dash or take it back out after getting it just right, I stuck the trunk badges there to cover my mistake. Now I kinda like em there...
trunk pics to follow

Here you can see the stealthbox & my amplifier mounted underneath. The amp can be slid forward enough to get at the top-mounted controls. The brackets are all aluminum.
You can see off to the left at the back my bright yellow zip-tie that keeps it from sliding forward during a quick stop. I may investigate a better way to do that at some point.
(Obviously, the slack in the wires is so I can slide it forward)
steve

Steve,
I have the same head unit, and I am going to purchase a 1999 A4 very soon. I'm glad to see your pics, as I was wondering about how to get the Eclipse in there, but what did you do about the stock speakers? Also, did you have the Bose system prior to putting your equipment in there? If so, how did you integrate it all? If not, was installation simple? Any more info would be much appreciated, as I'm already planning what I want to do. Please email your response as well as posting. Thanks.
Matt Ammon

Steve,
I am interested in your EQ piece you made. Do you have the plans or a pattern I could get for that piece. I am interested because I was thinking about taking out my ashtray and putting a boost gauge in it's place.
thanks
Christian J. Long

I'm glad to see your pics, as I was wondering about how to get the Eclipse in there, but what did you do about the stock speakers?
ripped them out like bad kittens. rear deck speaks must be completely removed for the stealthbox. All frontstage...used Eclipse Pointsource 5.25"s. Used MBQuart adapter rings ($25). The pointsource are coincident mounted drivers so the stock tweeter is still in the door, but not hooked up to anything.
Also, did you have the Bose system prior to putting your equipment in there? If so, how did you integrate it all? If not, was installation simple?
no bose. Installation was cake. Scosche made it easy with their wiring harness & antenna adapter (about $20). I originally used their faceplate ($15), but it required a bit of modification to work with the small faced Eclipse (not too hard tho' & Jerry at Scosche will help you out). The shop that did the alarm made the plexiglass one, so that is the only thing that I didn't do myself. Speak replacement is in the FAQ, I did a writeup on the stealthbox install (check the archives). Cake

Any more info would be much appreciated, as I'm already planning what I want to do. I was drawn to it because of its fit & integration & the way it keeps your trunk floor space free.
However, after the first month or so of playing with different crossover points (I have 12db/octave...second order...crossovers in the amp), I have found my personal sweet spot. The thing is loud & is painful before distortion, so it could take some abuse from someone who's into that sort of thing. I just want music reproduced as accurately as possible (without investing a fortune or hacking the car to bits). I'd call the stealthbox a major success...
steve

I don't have a template because of the way I did it, but here is what you do:
Take the ashtray/lighter unit out (instructions are in the archives or FAQ somewhere...basically open the ashtray & push down on two spring clips (easy if you have thin fingers...i don't, so it was hard) while simultaneously pulling forward. The whole unit comes out. Unplug the harness for the lighter (whoa...power source...constant on, tho'...one ground, one constant power, one power for light...think when headlights on?).
Ok, if you want to make a template, put the unit face down on the template material. If not, put it face down on your wood (or plexiglass, or whatever material you want to use). This is the slightly difficult part: hold a bright flashlight or worklight directly above the edge you will start to trace...& trace the shadow that is cast onto the material. DON'T TRY TO JUST TRACE AGAINST THE ASHTRAY ITSELF...I did that first & it comes out too small & looks bad. So, move the light to the next edge & trace that shadow. Do it for each edge & you should have good straight edges & rounded corners.
Now cut it out. I recommend making sure your top & bottom edges are exactly parallel before cutting. Use guide boards if you can because cutting with a jig saw without a guide will get you wavy lines that you'll have to clean up later (ask me how I know). Ok, now you have a decent piece (I used 1/2" thick wood because it allows a press-fit to hold it firmly in place), but you need to round off the edges for looks. A router will work, but after some experimenting, I found a hand sander ($25 from Sears!) works better since it is a small piece. Use the sander to round off all the edges (do both sides so it will fit better). Test fit in the space in the dash (make sure you clean it up a bit so you don't have sawdust all over your car). If it still needs work, then sand more, test fit...etc).
Ok, I cut a 1/2 DIN hole in it to get the EQ in, but you will have to cut holes that will allow the gauge(s) to fit. I'm betting 2 or 3 will fit in there...so cut those holes.
To prep wood, smear putty all over the front face & edges in a very thin coat. let dry, sand. You may have to do it two or three times to get all the grain & imperfections out. Use very fine sand paper & finish with 600 grit for a baby smooth surface. I then hit it with spray lacquer (black gloss). I would have saved myself some trouble if I had used some clear gloss coat to protect it...so now I'm recommending that :) BUT, it's YOUR car, so experiment with some different spray paints to see what YOU like (could try getting some interior color matched spray from the dealer).
Now you should have a beautiful gauge pod...good luck
steve

Excellent job! I am particularly interested in the Clifford installation: I would like the Concept 60 but I wonder if it could co-exist with the factory alarm since I have already changed the settings in the dealer (windows+sunroof up/down, no horn etc) and would like to use the folding key remote. Any suggestions around Atlanta area? I also guess you are familiar with the structure of the center console, so I would like to ask you, is it possible to drill and install switches anywhere around the climate control panel? I have checked the FAQs and found that there are some clips to secure the fascia in place, I wonder if you could suggest an alternative. Thank you very much!

Call him/her, tell them what you are trying to do. Tell them that Doc at Custom Car Stereo in Houston, TX did this (fully integrated with factory system...both arm & disarm together...get to keep my cool LED's on the door locks (98.5).) Ask him/her to recommend a shop that can do this. My installer works with Don McGill Porsche/Audi, so he knew a lot of the wiring, but he called the clifford support line & got the final details
and would like to use the folding key remote.
dunno bout that tho'...I use the regular style key now
Any suggestions around Atlanta area?
see above
I also guess you are familiar with the structure of the center console, so I would like to ask you, is it possible to drill and install switches anywhere around the climate control panel? If you mean factory style switches, then I dunno, but standard 12v radio shack switches could go just about anywhere back there. the clifford switch could be placed pretty much anywhere, for example...there is plenty of room to run wires.
hope it helps
steve
