I recently had my A4 1.8TQM in for its 10,000 mile service and asked the guys to reprogram so that the doors locked at 15 mph and the windows/sunroof remotely go up/down. They called back a couple of hours later to say that AoA had advised against the window reporgram as it apprantly can cause the entire electronic system to malfunction. They mentioned that some place on the internet was giving out the codes and causing problems......
The did the doors and they work fine.
Any similar experiences ?
Dave.

I asked my delaer to do the exact same thing for me in NYC and he had no problem with it. Be careful, this dealer will probably not wnat to "overlook" certain other modifiactions that you would make to your car. Advice: find another dealer and let him do it. Print out the FAQ sheets for him and bring it to the service appointment. He'll be pleasantly surprised...
Rob 1.8TQTip w/ the new codes locking the doors at 15MPH and windows rolling up w/ 1 click!

Let's say you get your system reprogrammed and then eventually trade in your car someplace. The new owner can't figure out what is going on because the car doesn't work like in the manual. So he takes it to a dealer and demands it be fixed. The dealer doesn't have a clue what is going on and starts replacing things and charging for diagnosis time. Customer is upset that his Audi has strange electrical problems.
A partial solution for this, of course, is for Audi to publish the codes to its dealers so they all are aware of it. However, this doesn't work too well because dealers aren't even aware of TSBs and other things that Audi sends them.
It isn't logical to me that it could damage the electrical system. The chips are designed to have this flexibility. (If they weren't, it wouldn't be possible to change the codes). Unless they are just saying that you will be putting additional wear on your lock and window motors due to increased use, that is.

My dealer told me that Audi had sent a service notification on the locking doors at 15mph and would do it at no cost.
The one button remote to unlock all doors, the service manager gave me a hard time, but the guys running the desk told him to do it. Afterwards they kept the codes I had printed out and were chaning all their own and wives cars.
They did charge me for the remote unlock feature.
Reggie
98.5 2.8QMS

I had done it a year ago and have had no problems whatsoever. As a matter of fact, my service was not aware that it could be done, and when they did it on mine, based on the info that I got on this site and provided it to them, a number of them did it on their cars as well. Now, when you will have to decide, it should not be that difficult, right?

Many features found in european vehicles are removed on north american cars for liability concerns. For example, the new porsche 911 convertible can be lowered and raised with the remote on european models but not on american models.
dan k.

1996 without remote control.
So i am adding remote control tonite, after spending an hour last nite figuring out how to make the remote work!!
PS.
i don't understand why every one complains about remote range. i am going to keep range fairly short, to minimize code coping devices.
I am also going to wire the remote so i can roll up the windows remotely.
1996 a4 2.8 qm (soon to have remote door unlock!)

In fact, you don't need any remotes to perform the reprogram, but the dealer needs at least one to verify the code change (i.e. new functions work properly). But you do not have to have both remotes, they (the remotes) have nothing to do with the actual programming. Trust me, I had it done and provided only one key (remote) and both work fine. The dealer didn't flinch when I asked them to do it (reprogram) and NEVER asked for the second remote.
Rob O
'98.5 2.8qMS

Agree with Dan. Talked to a Factory Rep regarding why I couldn't get a straight answer from AoA on the code change. He said that after the last legal battle Audi had in the USA they are extremely sensitive on doing anything that might repeat USA legal history

Well, mine is going back in tomorrow for the remote range fix. I'm leaving the second remote to be checked why it won't work. This remote is rarely used as it is my wife's. So it may just be coincidence that the remote was tested after the reprogramming. It could just be a dead battery. But since it's never used, it would seem that the battery would be better than the one in my unit, since it is used daily.

Probably don't like the possibility of the home video on 20/20 of someone's golden retriever getting decapitated cause the audi window went up automatically due to inadvertent button pressing or some stray signal.
The car/money ratio is waaaayyy to small. But
at least Audi's success forced the upgrade to
a 6 cylinder over that 4 cylinder nightmare
that didn't put out any torque 'til 4000rpm.
You must be very grateful that you can now
afford a decent bimmer.

A4 owners make fun of E46 owners because they have cheap wheel covers. I can upgrade the cheap wheel covers to awesome alloys for $2,000. Even if you chip your cheap four-banger, it will still be a cheap four-banger.
Anyway, I hope you guys have fun this fall getting smoked by chipped Jetta/Beetle/Golf 1.8Ts. HA HA HA.

I have to agreed with those that the standard E46 323 with 15 inch alloys are butt-ugly for the car in this price range. Also, I agreed with Car and Driver that the new E46 is becoming very soft in proocess. The A4 1.8T is unbeatable in this price, no doubt. But E46 is not a bad car either, just the standard suspension and tire/wheel package don't help. I think many people here also think the standard A4 suspension is pretty soft. Tires and wheels can upgrade at any times after you purchase the car home. Sorry for brought the last message that can creates another BMW vs Audi war. I have to admit I love my A4 and I respected BMWs, I used to own an E36 before this Audi. Message to BMW owners who "want" to start another war here: if you feel angry that C&D purchased a car that's basic compares to others and finished behind Audi. First, ask BMW why the car is so expensive to competes (the most expensive in the comparo). Secondly, if you are angry for being second, the Ford guys, Saab guys, Infiniti guys and Volkswagen freaks will probably have to shoot Audi owners because they lose to Audi in one comparison test. You Bimmer owners should satisfited with recent years' C&D comparo. Look at the 540 won against GS400 and E430. Look at the 328 Cabirolet won over 9-3 and CLK. What about that one "single" point our beloved 2.8QMS lose to your new E46 328? Probably will be a lot of car owners of other brands have to kill BMW owners because their Bimmers won too many comparison tests. Competition encourages improvements, that's what competitors are for! Understand? BMW 540 maybe leading the crowd, but the A6 4.2 and S-type V8 will catch you guys up very soon. If you hate Audi, leave the this message board and please leave forever, I don't want to see you again. If you personal attack our cars, you will know what's the result Jason and Matt will do to your message. We like BMW and we respect your cars, hope you can respect our brand and our car for the same way we respected Bimmer.org.
Sorry for long rambling
Tom
97 A4 1.8TQMS
99 JETTA GLS 2.0

I could have afforded a BMW just as easily as my Audi. I test drove a number of differently equipped 3-series and A4s and chose the one that I enjoyed driving the most.
Now, If I were to judge BMW owners by the insightfulness of your remarks, I might presume all of them to be immature and underendowed. Perhaps your fixation on price is a means of compensating for one or both of these deficiencies. Of course, I would endeavor to not be so presumptuous as I'm sure I would probably be wrong. Er... okay, maybe wrong.
Have an ultimate driving day!
- Rog
'99 Silver 2.8QMS
P.S. My apologies to the true auto enthusiasts on this Forum (both BMW and Audi owners). I promised myself that I wouldn't stoop to responding to such posts as the one above. In a moment of weakness I succumbed. I promise to work on my character deficiency for the future.

All the 3, 5, 7's rear are exactly the same as my Civic coupe does. Who says Japanese copy German. BMW is now copying HONDA's design. Maybe sometimes thay should copy our Odyssey minivan or City subcompact.
LUXURY CAR badge with econobox styling, only BMW can do, nobody can!
Audiphils, I am on your side!!!!

Nice attitude there buddy. Is this what the A4.org has turned into? Anyone driving other than an A4 cannot possibly challenge you on anything just because someone else in the past did and you did not care for it? How pathetic this board has turned into a "A4 is great or get out" message board in your eyes. If that is the general consensus here, I am out of here.
By the way, I own an A4 and cannot stand your arrogance.
H
99 1.8T QMS owner
