I just got off the phone with my service manager. I asked him two questions. 1. Does the turbo have any kind of aftercooler or device that cools the turbo after engine shutdown? Answer: NO, unless you consider the fan as an aftercooler. 2. Is there any need to let the car idle to cool off the turbo after hard driving? NO, if it needed any kind of cooling after shutdown they would have put one on. Makes sense to me.

Told you so! Actually, I wanted to point out that I am also pretty sure there is no after run fan on the 1.8t. I have never heard it come on in my turbo after a hot run in the Florida heat. Has anyone ever heard a run on fan come on AFTER shutdown?
Christaian

Who are you going to believe... the dealer or the owners manual?
The owners manual says to let the car idle for a minute or two after hard driving. I'm following the manual.

So when Buick decided it wasn't necessary to put oil circulators and/or cooling devices on their Turbo Grand Nationals (or any of the V6 Turbos, for that matter), this meant that they would not have benefitted from such devices? NOT! The failure of the majority of these underengineered Buicks is proof of that . . . . (except that most folks with 80's Turbo Buicks never notice that the turbine seized and just keep driving and rusting away happily with 50HP !)
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the Audi Turbos will explode at 50,000 miles. Audi certainly has one of the better products as far as turbos go.
But assuming that since the manufacturer and the dealer think it's OK it must be the right solution doesn't exactly make me entirely comfortable. Our '96/'97/'98 cupholders are proof positive of that, aren't they? ;-)
Big O '98 1.8TqMS with Mobil 1 and a pampered Turbo

If that's what the manual says I will follow it. So I guess there is a turbo aftercooler.........the operator.

As you will read below the owners manual apparently does say to idle it. On another note I don't believe you can compare Buick engineering to Audi engineering.
Everyone lighten up a little and let's buffer those bashing tendencies.

Sure! You don't need to cool your turbo if your car is stock but quite a few of us have aftermarket chips.
My 2 cents...

Never heard the fan (or any other motor) running after shutting off the car. Used to hear it all the time in my 96 Passat GLX (VR6) - both the radiator cooling fan and the small electric coolant circulator.
Charlie
98.5 1.8TQMS (3000 miles)

The A4's cooling (radiator...) fan does not run after the car is shut off. I've never experienced it and I think I recall others posting this.
The owner's manual does state that after something like fast and aggressive driving, to idle the engine for 2 minutes - I'd believe the owners manual 1st. For normal driving - I agree - no cool-down is likely necessary.
Tom
1.8TQMS Silver/Ecru

That was an honest, sincere post! Really! Unless you were kidding, and I took you seriously when I shouldn't have.
I really do believe that shutting off a turbo immediately after hard running can be harmful in the long run, and your dealer made it sound like that's hogwash.
I've heard dealers say "Yep, that's the way it is and that's the way it should be" waaaaaaayyyyy too many times. Truth is, most of them don't know, and the vast majority of them couldn't care less, but want you out of there with whatever answer you want to hear or will get you out of their hair (insert apology to those sales people that aren't this way, but I think it's the nature of the beast when you make $$$ by selling as many units as possible to as many people as you can get in the door, and is the main reason I'm not in sales!).
I may, of course, be completely wrong. But I'd be willing to bet the Turbo will last longer with a pump, cooler or good shutdown procedures. To Audi, a 100,000 mile failure rate may seem acceptable, and that's OK with me, but if I can make it last 300,000 miles with a simple adjustment then that's what I'll do.
I must be doing something right; I've put over 100,000 miles on several cars, and not a single one has ever used enough oil to be noticeable between changes (which are up to 10,000 miles on the 944) and my engines tend to outlast the bodywork.
Sorry if it seemed like a flame, it wasn't intended as such.

I totally understand what you are saying.

There is nothing about idling after hard driving in Finnish version of Audi A3 1.8T manual. These 1.8T cars are made for full throttle driving on autobahns. It should take normal treatment (limited speeds) very well without any idling.
Anyway I have a habit to cool down a moment or so every time before I turn off the engine. I also drive nicely the last 5 minutes or so. I also did this before I got Wett. I also did this on my Jetta 1.6 !!! Why? It's easy to do and only takes a moment and I sleep better after doing it. Also my wife does this.
HEY! YOU PEOPLE WHO IDLE!: Do others who drive your cars know you want it to be idled?!?!?!?
Marko Litmanen
A3 1.8T Wett 1.0 K&N
