For some reason, Audi decided that a big trunk was more important than a back seat that could accommodate humans. Perhaps this is a cultural thing in Europe, but I'd rather have the room in the back seat.
look when I move the front seats all the way up there is plenty of room

I think German people want the extra room for beer, sausages, and wiener schnitzel. :)
BTW, my mother and girlfriend sat in the back during my weekend test drive and had no complaints.
TGB 1.8T qMS

I know this is an oversimplified solution, since the roofline would have to be changed to maintain the current headroom in the back. But seriously, an extra inch or so of legroom in the back would hardly cut into the enormous trunk space. This would remedy one of the few shortcomings of the A4 for people who intend to use the back seat. I believe the new BMW 3-Series has only 1 or 1-1/2 inches of extra legroom in the back over the A4, and it is constantly being praised in the automotive press for this improvement. I hope Audi can address this issue when they redesign the A4.

After living there I have come to the conclusion that they are vacation pack rats. They stuff everything they can in the car and then travel for 6 weeks ...

I may have a need to drive people around on occasion, so if Audi wants to sell me my next car:
Audi needs A6 with
HP >250
SPORT suspension, tires, and wheels!
Go ahead and put the 6 speed in too!
If Audi can make a very fun to drive A6, I could be sold!

maybe it was to respong to the criticisms of the 80/90s which had a tiny boot. But uh, they REALLY overdid the trunk in the A4....just an inch or so would have made the rear legroom totally acceptable, IMHO
Adrian

Just make a REALLY short person (or someone with stumpy legs) drive. That'll give the passenger behind the driver's seat a fair amount of leg room and the right side of the car can compromise on seat position.
The key is NOT to get really long-legged folks into the front seat.
Yes, when we fill 'er up, my wife drives. There's no other way, as I sit just about all the way back, leaving not even enough room for a box of Mobil 1 behind the seat.

Who could ask for anything more, and so much for the ultimate driving machine!

But it's not going to happen. Even a 143 board didn't fit without folding down the rear seat.
Oh well, Looks like I'll be taking one less passenger in the car this season.
James Wu
A4 Club of Vancouver
1998 Black/Onyx 1.8tqa

A4 Club of Vancouver
