I've basically replaced the stock stereo with aftermarket stuff. Boston Accoustics Pro all around plus a sub in a sealed enclosure ... Alpine head-unit and changer.

I replaced the stock (paper blaupunkt) speakers with BA Rally speakers for about $250. It made a huge(!!!!) difference.
I have the following system:
- Sony MDX-C670 MiniDisc deck
- LLtek adaptor to fill the gaps in the dash, looks really nice
- HiFonics amp, 2x40W to power the front speakers
- Kicker Resolution 4" mid-bass at the front
- Kicker ND25 silk dome tweeter at the front door in the default tweeter location, sounds nice and smooth
- didn't change the stock rear speakers
This system isn't a crowd pleaser where it doesn't have a lot of boomin' bass, but I don't get listening fatique for a 4 hour long drive either.
Wong from North
98 A4 1.8TqMS Tropic Green
I ended up sinking a little of $3000, so, that may be more than you would want to. (I have Dynaudio speakers powered by a Butler vacuum tube amplifier, and if you can afford it, it does sound great).
I would only use front speakers using a custom kick panel installation. Get a good quality 4 channel amp (Precision Power for example) use two of the channels for the front speakers and bridge the other two to a subwoofer (a good clean, not loose and tubby, sub does wonders to your listening enjoyment).
I just think rear fill speakers are a waste, if you go to a concert you don't listen with your back to the stage. And if you have a passenger in the back, the last thing they want is music blasting in the back of their head.
As far as speakers go I obviously love Dynaudio, but A/D/S and Eclipse are good as well. I like soft dome tweeters over metal, but that is a personal taste decision.
