View Full Version : A very good write-up of Subaru's all-wheel drive system on auto.com's Forester test drive Tom 01-25-1999, 07:52 PM Here's the link:

Subaru forester test drive, last 3rd paragraph explains the difference between automatic and manual transmissions

Scott Price 01-25-1999, 08:33 PM I assume that the purpose of the link was primarily to examine the Subaru AWD system. As such, I feel obliged to point out an error in the above article. It states that with the automatic transmission, most of the power (torque, actually) goes to the front wheels (about 90/10 front/rear). Under poor traction conditions, it can go to 50/50 (not 60/40 implied in the article). This is true if the gear selector is in "D" or normal drive/over drive and helps fuel economy by reducing drivetrain friction. If the gear selector is in "3", "2", or "1", the torque split is set to 50/50 to ensure uneventful starts on wet or icey roads. The error in the article is where it states that with the manual transmission, most of the power goes to the rear wheels, but can vary the front/rear torque split. Gah! With the manual transmission, the torque split is 50/50 most of the time, but can vary from 90/10 to 10/90. That's it, I've said my piece. Now it's back to studying. the masked crusader 01-25-1999, 10:04 PM :) |
