Does anyone know how limited the supply of HID's from LLTek really is. I can't afford to get them right now because I just shelled out 10K for my down...it's gonna take a little while to recover from that. Within a months time though I will have this kind of expendable cash, what I want to know is should I try to get the HID's because they may not be around...or should I do Wheels and Suspension first. I have the stock susp and 15" rims, I feel like I'm drivin a 4x4 with that setup.
Maybe we could all get together and do a group purchase on HID's possibly get them down to $999.00 like the ones for the B5 Passat. Is this just wishfull thinking or do you think it's a reality? I imagine LLTek is in the very enviable position of being the first to offer HID to North Americans therfore they can charge more than some other catalog type companies might...basically I think that if you wait there will be more sources for this upgrade which will cause fierce competition which is to our advantage.

You will probably find the lights will become more available as time goes on. I can't see LLTek being the only ones to offer. Right now, the've got the exclusive. Probably the price will drop as well.
I bought some from LLtek because I live here in Canada, so I don't pay duty and taxes as if they were sent from the US.

i am a novice to hid, but:
seems as thogh (after going on art.xenon and bellof site) that the HID bulbs are a standard size (H?)
so why not get euro lens upgrades, then add xenon bulbs and ballasts later? the lenses sound functionally the same, down to the city lights?
comments
1996 a4 2.8 qm

That can definitely be done, but of you look at it, it's going to cost same or more than the S4 units.. $400-500 for bosch unit then $700-1000 for the D2R bulbs, ignitors and balast.. I have thought of doing this when I was told that the S4 units won't be available for months.. I am glad I waited for them.. Still waiting though!
Dmak 1.8TQMS

if James wants a stepped upgrade route (he doesn't have all the money now, and boy i know how that feels) he can at least get the euro now, knowing that the parts will be available for the rest as his funds accumulate.
DMAK:
you seem to becoming the HID expert (found your posts on the VW sites, etc).
How much are just the HID bulbs?
and of the ballast and ignitor, does anyone know electronically what they are? if it is simply a switcher and transformer to step up the voltage, this should not be an expensive item.

1996 a4 2.8 qm

Your comment that they will become more readily available isn't the case. There are only a very limited number of these units coming to North America. Hella will stop producing these units early this year. So, if you want a set...you better buy them now.
Additionally, the reason that LLTek is the only company selling them is because they are Canadian. These lights are E-coded lights (European)and as a result can only be legally sold through Canada where such lamps are legal.
Ron

I don't think I am an expert at Xenon.. Just did my research.
D2S bulbs are pretty expensive from my research I have found them for around $275+.. The cheapest set of ignitor and ballast and bulbs I have found were $700.00 modification is needed for these..
The ballast is exactly what you have said (transformer) I think it has to ignite the bulb at something like 25000volts?? That's why the units cut themselves off when your in an accident.. the voltage is so high on the ballast.. And the bad thing is, you cannot use the bllast again, because is shuts itself of permanently..
Dmak 1.8TQMS

How hard are these units from LLtek going to be to install into the A4. Is it going to be pretty much plug-n-play or is there going to be some wiring modifications made? If so, I would expect that the wiring harness, or whatever is needed, will be supplied with the units. I just don't want to receive the lamps and find that I have to invest more money to get them to work properly.
