My boss rode in my A4 yesterday and asked if I knew what the 4 ring Audi logo stood for. Slightly embarassed, I did not really know. He drives a Subaru Forester and knows what the logo means.

I'm pretty sure the stars in the Subaru logo represent the merger/divisions of Fuji the owner of Subaru. You should have just said "oh the rings mean the same thing" even if you didn't know and you would have looked good! Bad Move! =) 01-20-1999, 09:03 AM Mike Holder 01-20-1999, 09:37 AM The FAQ is a little on the terse side. The 4 rings are certainly the Auto Union logo (or the modern version of the original Auto Union logo). The 4 companies that were merged into Auto Union AG in 1932 were Wanderer (originally a bicycle company founded in 1855), Horch (founded 1899 by August Horch), Audi (founded 1910 by August Horch), and DKW (originally a company developing steam-powered cars, founded in 1916). The 4 ring logo originally had the logos of the individual companies in the center of each ring, thus the order of the rings (from left to right) is: Audi, DKW, Horch, Wanderer.
Auto Union merged with NSU Motor Works AG (founded 1873) in 1969 to form Audi NSU Auto Union AG. Their logo was just the words "AUDI NSU". While the 4 ring logo has been used pretty much continuously since the 1932 Auto Union merger, I'm not sure when the logo lost the 4 member company logos and became just the 4 interlocked rings.
All of this info is available on the Audi World website, and there's quite a bit more historical background on Audi, Auto Union, etc.
And if I remember right, isn't Suburu the Japanese name for a constellation? Maybe the Pleiades? And a representation of the Pleiades (7 stars) is the Suburu logo, right? Is there any more significance?

Audi World Facts Pages

Gramps 01-20-1999, 09:54 AM JP 01-20-1999, 10:20 AM Check out the Audi World Site, found in the links section. NSU was part of the corporate group, but not until the '60s, even though it existed since the previous century. It was not part of the original "4", nor was Porsche. |
