Is anyone else out there running a very modified stereo system?. If so, please reply with what it is. I've just started putting mine in, and was wondering what setups other people are using. Me, a Clarion DRX-9375R, w/ 3 sets pheonix gold rca's running to rear. Currently a hifonics 50*4 amp soon to be changed to a SoundStream Rubicon 805 (50*4 + 400*1 (into 2 ohm sub load)). Thinking about which subs i'm going to use, either 1 or 2 kicker SoloBarics or JL 12W6 (i think thats it). Anyone else have experience with these and the sound they generate in small or medium sealed enclosures. WHere did you people mount your amps. i currently have it on the back of the left back seat, but am considering a custom floor w/ clear panel for display built over spare tire. not going to replace the Bose speakers (for now at least). I WOULD BE VERY APPRICIATIVE OF any responces from people who have put a single 15" sub in teh back. Thanks

Chris,
Sounds like a pretty good setup.
Let me first recommend replacing those factory speakers!!! If you like to listen to your music loud, that soundstream amp will probably blow the crap out of those speakers and any decent aftermarket speaker will sound ALOT better....if you want high quality, go for some diamond audio or MB quart separates. If you want power, i recommend the soundstream SPL series speakers!! I have a SPL speakers all the way around in my blazer and they are loud (they are 2 ohm speakers)!!
Now on to amps......that soundstream amp will rock...but the sound quality is not the best for mids and highs....i would recommend getting a 2 channel Rubicon amp and bridging it to one channel for the subs (i'll get to them in a sec)...and get a four channel amp with cleaner sound...eclipse has a great 50X4 amp that retails for $600 (you can easily get it for much cheaper) and is crystal clear, or you could go with McIntosh (expensive, but worth it IMO) which have some of the cleanest sounding amps on the market...but if you just want power, stick with the 5 channel soundstream,,,BTW, i have the Rubicon 1002 drving the subs in my blazer (and i'm not a bass head...i listen to rock and like a very solid drum beat)
Subs...go with the JL's, they are great sounding subs and they will easily handle what you are going to drive them with...and they work great in a small sealed enclosure
Your head unit should be fine....BUT you should consider the Eclipse 5303R, it has one of the best preamp sections on the market...it has 5 volt preouts with a very low resistance...(higher voltage out gives you cleaner sound from your amp)..oh yeah, and it retails for under $600
Now, here is what is going into my A4 (i'm going for crystal clear sound)...
-Alpine controller (not sure on the model #) and CD changer, the controller has 2 preouts and accepts speaker level inputs from the radio(this is not an FM modulator)...so the factory deck stays in and i stash the little display somewhere
-2 Mcintosh 100X4 amps- 1 to drive the mids and highs and 1 bridged into 2 channels (400X2) to drive the subs
-Diamond Audio 5 1/4" separates all the way around
-2 JL 10W6 subs in a small sealed box
-the amps will be on rack behind the rear seat...when you open the trunk you see nothing, when you fold down the rear seats you see the amps..the are fan cooled so i'm not worried about them overheating back there
- the subs will be in a small box directly behind the amp rack..firing towards the rear of the trunk
Here's what i have in my blazer (dont read if you dont care..but i might explain why i recommended some of the components that i did).....
-eclipse 5303R...i love this thing
-eclipse 50X4 amp (100X4 into 2 ohm)
-soundstream rubicon 1002 (bridged to 1000X1) for the subs
-Sounstream SPL 6 1/2" sep's in the doors and SPL 5 1/4" coax's in the rear (2 ohm speakers)
-2 soundstream Exact 10" subs in a small enclosure...i needed these to handle the power of the 1002...
I was shooting for some serious power for the blazer...
If you want, email me and i could maybe give you some ideas for your car and some more detail on my plans for my A4 (i think this post is long enough!!)
Good luck!!
David White 98 2.8qm
I told you this was a long post

This is what i have -
Factory early-98 Bose system (i kept the deck and speakers)
Pioneer 12-disc RF
Pioneer DEQ-9200 EQ/X-over/DSP/etc. etc.
2 12W6 in a sealed box (1.05 cuft. each side)
RF 200x2 running the subs, 3 ohm stereo
Coustic 50x4 (piece o' crap amp) running the inside
1 Farad stiffening cap, 140A circuit breaker, 4 ga power wire. .. ..
Things, for the most part, sound really good. I have a set of MB Quart 215.03 seperates that i'm going to pop into the front doors when i have time, and i'm going to leave it at that. I don't believe that the 50x4 amp will blow the hell out of your speakers - the main reason why speakers blow is actually a LACK of power, which works the amp hard, and causes it to put out dirty power, which kills the speakers. I used to kill the W6's when I ran my RF at 0.75 ohm, because the amp had no dampening at that load (bridged the DVC and bridged the speakers, then mono load to the amp). Believe it or not, my biggest complaint is the lack of midrange - the system has highs that will make your ears bleed, no joke. I would recommend something new in the doors if your budget allows - but new interior amplification will make a bigger difference. I've had my system like this for about 9 months now, runs good. . .
E-mail me if you want more ideas, the trunk thing sounds really cool, but a bit space consuming. . . might also want to check out Rich Quinlan's page, he has a really trick setup. (Can i have your car, rich??? :)
HTH,
Edmund Louie
98 A4Q 30V
