I have been considering chipping my car with the Neuspeed chip (it's a leased vehicle, so I want stealth and also don't want to spend too much on something I can't sell or transfer later). After talking to Greedspeed, I understand that the ram air filter which they recommend only adds 1-2 horsepower ("barely measurable on the dyno" says Greedspeed). Instead, I'm told it helps the engine "breathe easier." Exactly what does this mean, if there's no appreciable HP difference? What's the benefit of spending the extra $38?
Also, Greedspeed says that they program the chip differently if your area sells 91 instead of 93 octane fuel. They say the performance difference is marginal. Anyone have experience with one programming format vs. the other?
Thanks!

I have the Neuspeed Chip in my 98 A4 as well as a K&N Drop in Filter. My reasons for getting the filter:
1. The filter is "lifetime" and only needs to be recharged/cleaned every 50K to 100K miles. IMO the filter pays for itself through the life of your car
2. The stock filter is made of paper (yuck)
Also, reading the box of the K&N filter...it claims to filter out smaller deposits that would normally pass through a paper filter. I'm sure the ram air does the same. In practical terms...
I had my car w/o the filter and chipped for over 20K miles. Now with the filter, the seems to rev smoother in each gear. High end torque also seems to be improved. The performance boost isn't spectacular, but I bought it as a means of keeping my engive has healthy as possble.
Howard Kim
98 A4 1.8tms(neu) K&N filter
P.S. I got my chip done at Neuspeed and they never asked what octane gas I use.
Howard,
I will consider getting a chip when I get an A4, and I'm wondering if the performance boost isn't spectacular is it even worth doing? I've heard others here rave about doing the chip thing?

I bet with the modification and the RamAir or similar aftermarket free flow filter....that you
will get more than 1-2 bhp gain. Ask them.
Steve S.
97 2.8QM

Even the lower Neuspeed chip gives 30 bhp. You can feel 30 bhp...you cannot
feel 0-5 bhp.
Steve S.
97 2.8QM
