I have seen postings on this before, but no real answer to the problem. I hear a "thunk" when I sometimes shift to 2nd and 3rd. I have not taken the car for service yet, but would be curious to hear if anyone else has had this problem.
Thanks

With my '99 2.8, I hear a loud "thunk" when *downshifting* from 3rd to 2nd if I don't blip the throttle to match engine speed to road speed first (or reduce the road speed by braking). I haven't notice it at all when upshifting. Is the noise you hear loud or do you really have to
pay attention to hear it?

The noise happens more when shifting between 1st and 2nd..up or down... It happens as soon as I step on the clutch. It is not very loud, but I do notice it and "feel" it.
I'd take it in to service if its noticably loud. I drove mine around the neighborhood a few times, shifting frequently, and couldn't hear anything except a slight "clunck" when the shifter moved between gears. This was just the normal noise of the shifter, happened between all gears, and was only noticeable if you paid attention to it. A passenger in the car would never have noticed. As I mentioned earlier, the only loud clunk I've ever heard was when clumsily downshifting between 3rd and 2nd and that
was the driver, not the car.

I feel/hear it on my 30V Avant also on a 1st to 2nd shift, largely when cold (not when warm). Pretty much the same as my old Coupe Quattro and similar to my experience on other cars. Coupe went 132,000 on orig clutch and tranny - tranny was fine when car was sold. This isn't troubling me on A4, I feel it's normal.
