They both came on the short track circuit at the same time. So the chinese decided to lable them by age, "S" is the younger, "L" for the elder, however the elder did not like the implication of "large" apparantly direct word translation for "older" from chinese to english and asked to be referred to as "A"

that they were called yong yong L and yong yong S.. for large and small, because of how it translated into english.. the older one.. didn't like being called L so, she wanted to be called A.. but they never changed the other to B.. because. they didn't want an A and B.. like first and second. just older and younger.
