overuse of quotation marks has got to be one of the most annoying and common grammatical mistakes.

The problem is that people put quotation marks around things that in fact are not quotations, trying to emphasize the words. Or "emphasize" the "words."

It's the written equivalent of the person who makes little quotation marks with their hands when they talk, which I think we can all agree is annoying.
