I've got 2 pairs of black shoes, one being a good looking but not-too-comfortable Kenneth Cole pair that continue to serve me well, the other being an all black pair of skate shoes. Work is a pretty casual environment, and I can get away with wearing the skate shoes a couple times a week if they blend with my outfit good enough, but I'm really getting sick of the KCs on the other days.

So I just need a completely simple and entirely comfortable pair of black shoes at a reasonable price. Anyone have anything that fits the bill? If I could have close to skate-shoe comfort with a dressier looking shoe, I would be a happy camper.

Where to look? Brands to avoid? Anything?

Though they can be a bit pricey. Most comfortable shoe, along w/ my rockports.

I love mine. As comfortable as a sneaker, and light too.

Rockport - comfortable, but I've never found their dress shoes to last...I wear my shoes for 12-16 hours a day & they just crumple.

Ecco - very comfortable, not many "cool" styles, but there are a few really good ones.

Aqua D'Italia (sp?) - very stylish, extremely comfortable, great quality & expensive. I'll buy more of these too.

Prada - my personal favorite. Very stylish, very comfortable, expensive though. These shoes last a long time...I don't have a problem spending the money if they last.

Remember, if you spend the money on shoes to use cedar shoe trees & leather conditioner & they'll last you much longer. As a habit, try not to wear the same shoe two days in a row, give the shoe tree time to do it's job i.e. remove moisture & put some shape back into the shoe. If you do this, you'll easily justify the extra money you've spent on a good pair of shoes.

Personally, I've got shoes that range from $150 - $750 & there are significant differences in the quality. Differences in fit, leather quality, construction & most definately durability. The key is taking care of them though.

Things have really changed for me in the last year.

I bought a new house w/all the trimmings, had a baby (wife did) and she also is only working 3 days per week.

Before those two things...it was dinner in restaurants every night & spend as much as I wanted on clothing & toys. The new house has really cut into my DI...but my sense of responsibility towards a good future for my family has taken the biggest toll on my DI.

Somehow it hasn't stopped me from modifying my car or buying Leafs/Raptor tickets on a far too regular basis...but I haven't bought a pair of shoes for over $400 in over a year. I'm really trying to change my spending habits, but am having a hard time. Happily I'm completely debt free other than my mortgage.

pretty affordable if you visit an outlet store too... but do beware that their sizes appear to run a bit larger than other brands, so try them on before buying (as you should always do w/ shoes anyhow =).

I too am new to fatherhood and cannot, for the life of me, justify pissing away large sums on mods based on the simple fact that I have a wife and son to support now(especially thinking about Jr's future needs).

Even prior, 400 on shoes was not doable.

Still, you've been there, I wish I could say the same!

Cheers,

Peter

They're both great and depends on what you need them for. The Ecco's are more of a walking shoe, while you might not feel too comfortable walking in Johnston & Murphy's for a long distance. Unless you already have a pair of driving shoes, the Ecco's do better than most shoes.

Also, I bought my Ecco's at a Johnston & Murphy store.
