Here's an excerpt from a guy on Fark...

<farkquote>

Okay, let's go over those magic ingredients [of Red Bull] here.

Taurine is an amino acid, albeit a non-essential one. Its effects are similar to creatine - it shunts water from the blood to the cells, reducing blood volume (hence the headache) and causing dehydration.

Glucuronolactone is a stimulant and is one of the main ingredients in a commercially-available (and one would presume FDA approved) tonic for fatigue. It's quite unsafe for people with heart trouble.

We all know about wonderful, soothing caffeine. It gets rid of that 1 PM headache, along with being a vasodilator and diuretic. Too much will also do interesting things to your heart rate, and we all know an excess of this stuff (like a whole box of "wake-ups") will kill ya.

Put em all together and you've got the ultimate raver drink. A can or two of this crap will suck ya dry and leave you with a biatch of a headache on your way back & forth between the can and the dance floor. The increased heart rate is juuuust what you need when you have low blood volume and are dehydrated [dripping sarcasm]. Would you add alcohol - another dessicant - to this mix? Then go dancing? Hell why not just pop a couple ecstasy while you're at it!

(I believe that mix is what they feed to soldiers on Dune so when they're captured by the enemy there won't be any water to suck out of their bodies)

I slam a can twice a week before a workout, but have plenty of water on hand during so that I'm staying hydrated. Is this bad? I really need that kick to get deep into my workout.

As far as excess caffeine goes, I've been dosing about four cups a day for the last 10 years so my body's used to it, and I put away about 40 oz of water a day.
