I just got snow tires and decided I really dislike the hub caps.
Ive also noticed lots of Audis (and Volvos) with winter tires sans hub caps. Just steel rims.
I think this doesnt look half bad.
So I wonder, is this a fashion statement "Hey look I have snow tires, that's why I have steel rims and its not just because I dont know anyhting about alloy wheels." or is it because people just dont bother with hub caps?
These are new cars, not old beaters that may have lost of dont care about the look of the wheel.

Any comments?

That's why I bought 16" R-28s for winter w/Pirelli Winter 210A.
This is not a flame, just my opinion. I understand the reason for steel wheels/caps; I'll really understand it after a few winters, when I'm refinishing my R-28s. 8^)
CraigB
(eating only rice 'til spring to pay for winter wheels)

Why don't you put wreaths on your steel wheels! And maybe you could thread matching ribbon through the grill. :-O
Sorry Jim, I just couldn't resist!
Happy Hollidays!
Robert Jordan
a.k.a. smarta$$

I have to agree the look of steel makes me cringe and I hate the hub caps. Plus, the cheap ugly plastic caps they sell were always falling off. On the other side, I don't want to spend the extra $ right at the moment (since my package came w/steel 2 winters ago now). The tires will see one more season so why bother. I'll get new ones next winter with better rims.
I'd rather spend my money on the more important upgrades I'm planning this winter.
So you can all just look at my A! car with steel and say hey "looks like an evening gown with army boots"!
-C. (Waiting 'til it actually starts snowing here...still got my OZs on!)

I currently have my snows on steel rims without hub caps. (BTW, I think they call them 'Wheel Covers' in the cappacino bars and such :) )
I don't know whether I want hub caps or not. I have not really had time to deal with it. I know my dealer replaced several steel wheel/hub cap Jettas with alloys so they have a surplus of 15" hub caps. He said they would use a heat gun to remove the VW symbol in the middle and sell them to me for $25 each CDN. I don't think I will find them cheaper than that...But I don't think it looks that bad just wiht the steel wheels for winter...
I guess that is the long way of saying I am indifferent about the subject.
TGB

'98 A4Q Tip, pearl white. 15" Nokia NRW's on black steel wheels, no wheel covers.
I've got Quattro, I've got snows on all four corners, and I want the world to know so they'll get the h*** out of my way! It kind of gives the car (unwashed for 6 months at a stretch) that "serious local" look that gets you past CHP/CalTrans chain checkpoints without getting out to prove you have chains in the trunk.

Hmmmm, I like it. Have you ever read the book 'Class' by Paul Fussell? He goes in to theories like that.
