just out of curiosity, when do you guys actually turn on the rear fog light? i live in florida and my idea of a rear fog light use involves a heavy snowstorm, at night, while travelling down a seldom travelled frozen gravel road in the mountains with lots of tall evergreens along the side (kind of eerie, i know). i still think it is a neat feature to have.

I use mine whenever visibility is reduced, for any reason or to any extent. I would rather look dumb driving around with the rear fog light on than get hit by someone.

My suggestion is to turn it on whenever conditions require it. Use yourself as a gage. If you would like to see the car in front of you better, turn your rear foglight on to help those behind you see you better. The light does draw more attention to your car, if not annoy people slightly, so if you feel like making yourself more visible, turn it on. Especially in weather conditions that may require a little extra stopping distance.<p>-Micah

The cop thought one of my breaklights was stuck on and not working properly.

<br>It was one of those out of control college road trips. One girl we had kept from driving finally connived her way into the driver's seat for a block. Of course she hits all of the switches and I'm the one driving later that gets pulled over. It took quite a while to figure out what the cop was saying. I highly suggest a Holland/Belgium road trip in the equivalent of a U-haul van with 8-10 friends. It's not an Audi, but is is an experience!<p>Todd W

I live in Florida, and the only times that I have used the rear fog light is when it is pouring rain. One of my friends was following behind me once and thought that one of my brake/tail lights were out. I think everyone thinks so.. I was surprised when I saw rear fog lights on a C280 and an SLK. I thought it was only Audi, but that's just ignorance for you.

Did the SLK and C280 also only have ONE rear fog light like the A4 or was it on both sides?

On my 90CS it is only on one side of the car, so it resembles another turn signal. If there's someone following you to get somewhere, approach an intersection and turn on you indicator. After a bit start flashing the rear fog light on and off and it looks like you just turned on the indicator for the other way too. That'll confuse 'em.

When you got pulled over, was it foggy or rainy at the time?<br>

I used mine twice yesterday:<br>1. The car behind me didn't have his lights on at night. The rear fog light as a signal didn't give him a clue.<br>2. When someone in a rice rocket was tailing me at 80 mph by a few feet.<p>Is this acceptable use of the rear foglight, or should it be reserved for the fog?

I turn it on in fog and heavy rain. You do get the occasionally misty night in South Florida, from what I remember.<p>Never turn it on if you plan on running way over the speed limit. They can see you from a mile away.<p>I also use it every now and then when some idiot is tailgaiting me. They always back off, must think I'm hitting the brakes or something.<p>_Manny

<br>Just a quick comment about fog lights. I seems polite to turn the light OFF when someone is following close behind. It really is a pain to follow a car with fog lights turned on continually. It is common to see fog lamps on at all times in Europe even though they are only supposed to be turned on when visibility is really bad and when no one is following.<p><br>

...and I know it is NOT due to a battery problem in the remote, since the car *is* receiving the signal (interior lights come on). Also, if I manually unlock the doors, the vacuum actuator works and the doors unlock. <br>I also know that this has nothing to do with the remote since I use an aftermarket alarm (Clifford).<br>Apparently, in cold weather, there is some type of problem with communication somewhere between the car's remote receiver and actuator - since bothwill work independently of each other - just not together when it gets too cold. The dealer can never reproduce this, and since it's not much of an inconvenience anyway, I don't even worry about it anymore.<p>tom<br>'98 2.8
