This morning, the temp was below freezing, and I was kinda late going to work, so instead of scraping ice, I just figured the Audi Alcohol fluid with the help of the heated nozzles should take care of it...
Well.. the nozzles wouldn't squirt anything!! I heard the motor, the headlights were plenty wet, but nothing came from the nozzles. The car had been running for about 10 minutes before i tried this.
I'm guessing the nozzles only heat up when the washer is activated?
Rich Quinlan
Nowhere near stock 1.8tqms

Quinland

I've never heard of a frozen windshield washer line on an A4... especially with the high-alcohol-content fluid Audi seems to have fallen in love with. Every time I started up the car during the tail end of last winter (97-98) the heated fluid worked just fine...
Cameron
You got a 1997 (Recaro sport seats, etc.)... how did it do last winter on this front? Almost all of the country seems to be +10F from last year's temperatures.
Did you garage the car last year, but not this year? Even if that's the case, those lines shouldn't freeze. What's the current low in your area? It might be, if the wiper line heater is always on (seems reasonable, since the car doesn't know when you'll have the urge to squirt washer fluid) it might have the same heated-mirror-failure problems... along with the rest of the permanently engaged heating elements. Opinions from the mirror experts?
Heated squirters still working as far as I know,
Cameron in a relatively warm Chicago December
But the heater clears that up in a few seconds.
Rich,
Check the hoses to your nozzles. On my '93 90 they would frequently come loose, they lead into a rubber connector at the nozzle and are only held in by pressure. If you get a clog or something in the nozzle the back pressure can cause them to come loose. I used some simple plastic tie straps to hold them in place and havn't had a problem since. I also had one come loose at the reservior, which required me to remove the front left tire and plastic wheel well to gain access to it. Luckly the hose was right at the front and easy to get too.
I'm going to guess that the A4 has the same type of setup. Take a look to see if the hoses have come loose.
Matt

I don't like getting in the middle of these flame posts but this really irritates me here.
C'mon, I have friends of all ages and backgrounds so I don't quite understand why you have to post a slam to another car enthusiast just because he may be younger and more well-to-do than you.
Besides, posting a note like that is more of something a ten year old bully does.
You normally contribute interesting comments on your posts, so what is this nastiness about today?
-Cathleen
No, she was outdoors last winter, too, come to think of it... It's supposed to freeze again tonight (~25 degrees), so we'll see.. I hadn't used the washers in a long time, and that might have had something to do with it..(?)
I LOVE my heated Recaro's... they are great, especially with the remote start.. nice and toasty..
Oh well, it's going to the dealer soon anyway for the 30k service.. we'll see!
Rich Quinlan

Quinland

I sure hope the Audi engineer that believed "everything that is powered on constantly will survive forever" is now producing the yellow air bag decals......
The engineering mentality on this subject really sucks and Audi continues to make the cars this way!
Please Audi change the brain dead design......
