View Full Version : Anyone know if there are any "phone signal amps" out there?

I need to boost the strength of my phone signal in my house. It appears that my Tivo player detects a dip in signal strength and it thinks someone is trying to make an outgoing call, so it hangs up. As some of you may know, without the program guide the TIVO is pretty much useless, and the only way to get it is via dial up. So basically I'm looking for something that I can plug into the jack that would boost/stabalize the signal as much as possible. Does such a thing even exist?

TIA-
Ernesto

TIVO needs a phone line in order to make it worthwhile? Am I reading this wrong? Is this to say, if I were using the telephone, TIVO would lose functionality?

The call occurs once a day/ at random hours.. i.e. 1am, and it download/uploads info from the player. The program guide being the key.

Since the big thing is the recommendation votes to X Files. So now it records X Files which feature (i.e. you vote on programs you like, and then when not in use, it will go a record other programs of the same type. For example, I gave 3 are in rerun/syndication, this only occurs as long as their is space on the player.)

I got the 60hr player, which really records 60 hrs at low quality, and about 20 hrs at the highest resolution. I'm getting about 40 hrs at the medium setting which is between cable, and direct cable (SVHS) in terms of quality.

If I can't get this phone thing figured out, it's going back on Saturday. ;-(

I'm sure you're not the only one that may be experiencing this problem and they mau have already addressed this issue.

but will work for your application. It connects to your TiVo and then xmitts to a reciever at a good location.

Sounds like your phone line may have problems. How did you diagnois the issue?

First Kudos to their customer support. In a past life I build analytical apps for Call Centers/Customer Support Ops and these guys have their act together. And they don't go.. try this and call us back. They actually hang on the line with you.

So I spent about an hour going over a couple of things with them. And the rep acknowledged that a small portion of their customers are having these types of problems. In the future (1-2yrs out) Ethernet hook ups, and maybe even wireless transmitters might be a possibility but for now, it's good old Ma Bell.

I'll stop by Radio Shack tonight, and pick up a pair. See if that helps out with this problem. Overall I'm happy with my Tivo, don't like the "no power/reset button" but I can live with it. Can't wait for the boxes to go web and dump the phone.

Cheers,
Ernesto

Ring Equivilent number, or something like that. It goes back to when phones had actual bells in them. Most phone lines can handle about 1.5 total REN. So, if your phone uses .2, and your ans machine uses .4, and your modem uses... it all has to add up to about 1.5 or less. MAybe only 1.

I would see if you can find the REN for all your telephone equipment you have connected to ALL your phone jacks. It should be on the equipment, or in the manual. The older the equipment, the more it probably uses. My caller-id box uses 0.

If you have a lot of stuff, or one that uses a lot, remove it, and see if your tivo then works. If not, try disconnecting all equipment not normally used, like phone in extra bedroom, bathroom :), etc.

The problem with getting a booster, if you can even find one, is that phone lines actually carry current. I don't remember the figures, but it is a specific amount. That is why if you have too many things connected, you have problems. Get way to much stuff, and your phones won't ring. So, adding a booster would increase the normal voltage when the phone is not in use, possibly causing dammage. One of the easiest ways to have your equipment damaged from a power surge ie lightning, is through your phone lines. I've seen dead computers from this.

I am 7.6 REN right now and I have no problems.
Cordless phones are evil. Take it off and see if it works. Pay extra for your phone companies Wire Master plan and then have them come fix it.
