Has anyone experienced this? To me, the sound seems to be coming from the rear shelf. I have shoved towels in between the glass and rear-brake light plastic and that seems to stop it for a day or so, but the sound always comes back. Any help for me? Any hope of having a quiet interior ever? :( Thanks.
--frank
I did not realize this until I had the occasion to ride in the back. Most of the road noise (especially that that makes it sound as if a door is ajar) comes from the outside corners of the back seats. I made sure the seats were latched in place, but the noise persists. I am sure this is in all A4s, but some people do not notice it. I didn't either until I behan to get used to how quite this car is.

I had a similar problem. I think the housing of the brake light gradually comes loose and vibrates against the rear window glass or something similar. I got the vibration in my A4 to stop by removing the housing and reseating it in a slightly different position.
Andy Lensink
'97 1.8TQM, Hoppen chip, etc.

Go into the trunk and shove a towel between the rear deck and the metal bracing below it. I haven't had a rattle since.HTH.
Chris

It sounds weird, but it may actually be your rear window. I had a noise problem coming from the rear shelf area and also tried the trick of stuffing a towel under the shelf but it didn't work. There's a Tech Service Bulletin (#64-98-03)that provides a procedure to deep-inject some silicone lube around the rubber seal on the rear window. My dealer did this for me in early October and I haven't had a problem since.
John G
96 2.8 fwdm
Pearl
